If a guy could get his hands on a Remington 788 .243 for nothing. is it possible and is it worth it to use it as the basis for a rifle build... rebarrel and do some action work if need be and drop it in a decent chassis?

Re: Remington 788 rebuild

I did. I actually re-barreled mine into a tight neck .222 Krieger and a 24 Hour Campfire McMillan Remington Varminter stock. I scoured Ebay until I found a nice, old Redfield scope base; placed a 4.5 X 14 X 40 Leupold LR in a set of Burris rings, and called it good. As you would expect, it shoots very nicely.

Never turn down a free (or cheap) 788! They typically shoot very well in factory condition. If not they're just as easy to re-barrel as a 700.
