Remington 798

Re: Remington 798

Its a mauser style action(long)not my first choice for the cost of building a rifle on a stock action I would go 700 or save up a little more and use a after market action ymmv

Re: Remington 798

It's a large ring Mauser 98 design. The platform served as the primary sniper rifle in the UK, from 1972-2003. Google Parker Hale M82. The aftermarket is massive, but not the precision aftermarket. That said, what are you going to need? Barrels are available, McMillan makes stocks that work, picatinny bases from EGW. It's all there, just not to the level of a Remington.

Seriously, it's a Mauser Md. 98. You cannot go wrong.

Re: Remington 798

I have one as my hunting rifle and love it, but would probably look elsewhere for a precision build unless you're just going for the unique "just cuz" factor. The factory trigger is fully adjustable, and is actually pretty sweet. You'll have to google that because Remington doesn't want you to know you can change it from the lawyer setting.

If you want something just to be different, a Mauser action that says both Remington and Zastava on the side is pretty fun. You'll just have to look a little harder and potentially pay a little more to turn it tactical.

Re: Remington 798

The Mauser 98 action is what caught my interest. I already have a Remy700 in 06 that I built and absolutely love it. I'm exploring the different options for another build and so am looking at something different--and I'm a long action .30 cal fan

Im subscribing to this as I justed ordered parts to do the same project. Im trying to do it at a reasonable cost as others have suggested its not the best platform to start with. I like to be different, i like the underdog, and I hope to attain the performance of a rifle that costs twice as much.

The reality is that there is no guarentee.

Ive ordered the speedlock, timney trigger, (i read the stock trigger can get sketchy when reducing trigger pull too low, but i cant confirm.) , and a high tech specialties stock.

Im going to try to do as much work as possibl myself. Such as glass bed action, lap lugs and bolt, possibly order a short chambered barrel an install it myself. Ill have to send out the action to check squaring.

At the moment im looking at barels from pac_nor, shilen, rifledouglas, walther, brux, and bartlein. Im waiting on responses to my inqueries. Im thinking #2 or #3 contour since its a hunting rifle.

Do you think it is a mistake to install your own barrel? With the reamer and go no go gauge it doesnt seem like it would be too complicated. BUT a barrel is a pretty expensive piece to f up the install.

Pac nor seems like a pretty good deal for sending in your action. $300 includex truing the action, lapping, and barrel install. Id probably have $100 in tools just for doing the lapping on my own.

Sorry about the length of post, tell me more about the direction you are headed.
