I just put new bottom metal in a Remmy 700 HS precision stock. I used my old screws when I put them in it tightens up fines but its like there are only a couple of threads catching. Is this normal? I just have to turn the wrench twice and there tightened up. Everything seems secure, I was just checking. They torque down right. Just worried about how many threads were catching. Are there supposed to be longer screws to use?

Re: Remington action screws?

Best way I've found to sort this out.

Snug everything up as you did. Mark your screw head with a sharpie noting the clock position. Begin to rotate CCwise till it comes loose.

Now you know your amount of thread engagement.

In our case we make our own screws inhouse. They are longer than needed by design. We start with the front screw. Install till its tight and attempt to insert the bolt. It will stop short. Begin backing out till the bolt rotates into battery and then add an extra 1/2 turn just for good measure. If its 5 rotations you multiply by the pitch (1/28=s .0357/rev) and this is how much you trim off the screw to fit it properly. In this case you'd buzz off almost .180" from the end of the screw.

Repeat on the rear till the start of the thread is flush with the root of the groove that the cocking piece tracks in.
