I recently picked up a new unfired Remington M40 SSA Commemorative. This is my second one, the first was purchased as soon as they were available in 2006. Fit and finnish were underwhelming so I sold it before I shot it much.

Recently I stumbled across another one, higher serial number so I assume later manufacture. Fit and finish was pefect, it was unfired, original box and all the papers, and was $200 les than original retail price.

Currently it has a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40mm in Leupold low rings with Leupold one peice mount. I have cleaned the bore and conditioned it with Tetra Gun lube as described on the Iron Brigade Armory website Tetra Gun Break in Procedure

So far I have 80 rounds through the rifle of mixed Federal American Eagle 150 grain and Federal Power shok 150 grain soft point. Groups off the bench are quarter sized(1" - 1.25") at 100 yards.

After I get to 100 rounds I will clean and retreat the barrel and see how it shoots with Federal Gold Match 168 gr ammo.

Trigger pull is 5.5 pounds. I ntend to adjust to 3.5 pounds. All in all I am happy with the accuracy of this wood stock, aluminum butplate, un bedded 5.5pound trigger pull rifle.

I intend to get the Badger Ordnance copy of the original style Redfield rings and baseas well as a more period correct scope. I'll probably replace the Remington bottom metal with steel as well.

Has anyone else done anything with the M40 commemorative?

Re: Remington M40 SSA Commemorative

Mike: Well, I’m probably the last one who should tell you to “Leave it alone” as, I’ve been known to swap everything to get the rifle (or vehicle) modified to my personal preferences.

So, with that in mind, only make changes that you can correct should you later decide to return the rifle to its original “stock” condition.

For the Remington aluminum bottom metal, get a drop-in steel replacement that simply bolts in and doesn’t require any modification to the stock.

Re: Remington M40 SSA Commemorative

I vote to sell/trade me the stock....

Nice rifle...IF I had one I would leave it as is and look for the correct type mount and "of era" scope.

Re: Remington M40 SSA Commemorative

Yup. Leave well enough alone is good advise.

Hard to follow sometimes, but good advise.

I have a Williams Firearms drop in replacement steel floorplate assembly that I would swap in and leave original peices with box & papers. Only changes that need a screw driver and no glass bedding with pillars etc.

I have added a Turner Saddlery M 1907 sling.

Re: Remington M40 SSA Commemorative

I had one of those. I found it interesting that a bore brush would feel like it was tightening up halfway down the barrel and then loosen back up as it got closer to the muzzle. (That was before I knew you should NEVER Break-in a rifle and didn't need to clean it that often). The gun shot sub-moa but that always puzzled me. I only fired less than 100 rounds thru it before I sold it.

Re: Remington M40 SSA Commemorative

I have one of these and I love em. Id like to get a couple more as well. The only change that I did to mine was put a tall flat safety on it. When I get home from deployment Im going to bed it and send the Redfield scope out to get fixed. I wouldnt make any changes to it. I keep it the way it is. Plus I look at it as a piece of history and will keep it to that.

I don't buy into the tedious break in process either, tried it once and it wasn't worth the effort.

The Tetra Gun process only took 20 rounds and seems to have conditioned the bore.
I swabbed the bore with Tetra Gune lube after the first 20 rounds followed by a dry patch, then did not clean the gun until 70 rounds. Bore seemed to clean easier and there was very little copper fouling.

I tried the process because I had an Iron Brigade Rifle that they had conditioned the bore with Tetra Gun.
