I’m new, looking into shooting long range and maybe some day competition. No experience with anything other than an old Remington 700 in 300 win for hunting deer. Looking for some opinions on the remington PCR and easy upgrades to make a decent setup to hit steel at 1000.

You shouldn’t need to modify anything on that rifle to hit steel at 1000. As far as accuracy, that is up to your own standards. Everything can effect that. Bipod, glass, barrel, even the hand guard. I have an RPR in 308 with a 20” barrel, paper city hand guard, 20x42 SWFA SS, Harris bipod, and it reaches 1000 just fine. If you’re looking at competing, a lot of guys are going with the 6.5 Creedmoor due the the faster and flatter tragectory. Glass is usually Nightforce, Vortex etc. Many are using custom barrels. Harris and Atlas are common bipods unless you’re looking at a dedicated F class setup. Midwest and Seekins offer great hardguards with very little flex. The sky is the limit, but that rifle should hit steel at 1000 out of the box

I have a PCR in .308 with about 1000 rounds through it now, I'd recommend switching the trigger out from the stock one. If I were to do it again I would probably go with 6.5cm, but still happy with my purchase.

I did not follow a strict break in procedure. Just did a complete clean before shooting it then a cleaning at 20 rounds and the next couple at 50 rounds now I clean after each outing which is generally between 50-150. After firing 100-200 rounds look for wear lines between the action and chassis. I was getting a good amount of movement after bedding it just at the front lug my accuracy improved 15-20%. Other people I've spoken with have not had this issue with there action/chassis, but its something to look out for.
