Gunsmithing Remington switch barrel

Re: Remington switch barrel

You can also use a Winchester, FN or Ruger action becouse they have the intergral recoil lug and will run you about the same price as a Remmy action.

If you go with the Remmy action having the recoil lug pinned is the only way to go.

The advantage would being able to change the barrel as easily as it is changed on a Savage and in being able to easily set it to zero headspace.

Re: Remington switch barrel

If you can change a light bulb you can change barrels. A modest amount of equipment is all that is needed. Pinned lugs are the easiest and it's no trouble pinning a lug on a 700. I install two pins. You can even go with two or more bolts and cover everthing. They need to be fitted the same time the action is trued.

Re: Remington switch barrel

I had asked about this a few days ago. I'm interested in a switch barrel myself. I have a Win 70 CRF that I'm going to barrel to .338-06 and was contemplating having a barrel chambered for .280 made for it. I'm just concerned with the ease, or lack there of, of pulling a barrel and putting another one on. Especially with the timing issue posed by the cut in the barrel for the extractor.

I suppose if you really know what you are doing, you could have a ton of calibers that would fit on a .473 bolt face and only have to buy barrels and get them chambered to that caliber and already trued action. Talk about saving thousands in the long run.

Unless there is a big big difference in the amount of torque used when installing a barrel they index to the same place. On a Model 70 with an extractor cut I use a specialy ground cutter that's .500" wide. A model 70 extractor measures about .400" so there's .050" clearence on a side. Lot of room there. On a properly trued action the headspace doesn't change either. It is really a simple process.

Pacnor already makes barrels and nuts for the Remington. They use the Savage nut wrench.

I've also heard that McGowan and Shilen will also soon be making pre-fits for the Remingtons.

A pinned recoil lug would be very beneficial.

Re: Remington switch barrel

Thanks for all the response, this custom stuff is new to me and I just want to get the most out of this build as possible. I already have the Remington 700 its a 300wm in a HS Precision stock with a Nikon Monarch scope that shoots really good, but I have a Brux barrel thats going to be chambered in 7wsm and I have a 270wsm barrel on the way also and if I could do a switch barrel setup it will save alot of money over having three different rifles. So it sounds like I need to have the action blueprinted, lug pinned and the barrels headspaced using a shoulder instead of a nut. With the shoulder the headspace will be the same each time after torquing down is this correct?

Re: Remington switch barrel

When you switch barrels is there some way to put a torque wrench on it or do you just spin it until it won't spin no more, or in my case the extractor cut lines up?
