I need to remove the round handguard from my Armalite AR-10 so I can replace the pin that holds on the ejection port cover. (The current one is too short and Armalite sent me the longer correct one.)

There do not seem to be numerous choices for Armalite tools; I found these two (click to view):

PlastiXrevolution

Wheeler Engineering Delta Series

The PlastiXrevolution looks as though it provides a better clamp than the Wheeler, plus it's non-marring. But it would require removing my scope and mount. (Ring marks were on the scope when I bought it.)

Or is there a better tool? (BTW, I talked with Glen in tech support at Armalite and they have a home-made tool. They don't sell its equivalent.)

I'm still not sure what to use on the handguard. A padded oil filter wrench?

Thank you,
Richard

It sounds like the gunsmith tightened the barrel nut, that is a separate piece from that fluted lock ring. Here, this link has some good photos to use for reference

That's a big help! I knew it was a two-part operation; but I could not remember precisely how the handguard lock ring fit the barrel nut.

Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction.

Cheers,
Richard

I took quite a look at that but the PlastiXrevolution looked like a better choice for this application. Of course, I could be wrong. Will find out.

My new main question is what the heck to use to grasp the handguard to remove it.

Cheers,
Richard

You’re also gunna want something to take the stress off the upper. @TacticalDillhole is right. A reaction rod is the right way to do it.
