I am going to duracoat my rifle this weekend. I have loktite on my base screws its the red. What will I have to do to get them to break loose without stripping, or should I just duracoat with it on it?

Re: Removing scope base?

Red loctite breaks down with heat. Lots of heat. Like a cubic ton of heat.

Remove the bolt and hit the receiver with a heat gun set to the warm side of hell.

Re: Removing scope base?

I had mine coated with the base on, but if you're in a wet/humid enviroment it might be better to get coating under it. Like hink said heat, 300 degrees if I recall correctly, try holding a soldering iron to the heads, make sure you have a tight fitting bit for the screws, you do not want to strip the heads, if they do not come fairly easy they're not hot enough.

Re: Removing scope base?

Just leave base on and have at it with duracoat. Red Locktite is some good stuff espically if you were generous with it when installing screws. Throw a allen on it and give it a little force and that will let you know how hard its going to be to remove. Best of luck.

Re: Removing scope base?

If you don't want to coat it with the base on use a soldering iron held on the head of the screw for a couple of minutes to heat it up, no need to heat the whole receiver.
