folks,
I have a question on replacement stocks.

First off, i am a hunter, and this will be for my hunting rifle. i want to slowly put together a longer range hunting rifle. i have several rifles that shoot great out to normal hunting distances, but i recently acquired a rem700, .338 RUM. and i want to turn it into a long range hammer (5-600 yards is my definition of long range). please no ethics police on shooting animals at long range, its only for when the situation calls for it, and when i am absolutely confident in my abilities.

I want to replace the stock first. one, because it is pretty wood and i don't want to bash it dragging it through the mountains chasing elk, and 2, for accuracy and comfort shooting.

i have adjusted the factory trigger down to 2.5-3 pounds on my scale and breaks very clean. i topped it for the moment with a minox za5 3-15x42mm scope. for the moment it will be shooting nosler trophy grade ammo with 225gr nosler accubonds. my rcbs reloading kit came in the mail today, so it will be shooting handloads in the future.

and now for the stock. unfortunately, i am on a budget with my toys, so i can't really drop the highest end tactical stock on this rifle. and i need it light weight enough to drag up and down mountains. i was looking at the B&C M40 tactical line, as well as their classic medalist stocks and sporters.
stockys also carries the hs precision pro series stocks like this..

any recommendations on what to look for in a replacement stock? i can bed an action and float a barrel, but have never tackled pillar bedding one, would this be recommended when i replace the stock?

any help/comments would be appreciated.
Thank you
John

Re: replacement stock for rem 700 question

If you buy a stock with an aluminum block it won’t need to be pillar bedded. The BC stocks you mention should all have aluminum blocks.

Re: replacement stock for rem 700 question

I would start by shooting it first because you might find out for your type of shooting that gun my be all you will need for right now.338 are shooters and you said you are going to reload. So Id play with the reloading and go from there.then git your action trued, barrel and all them other good thing for it. For the stock like the m40 line

Re: replacement stock for rem 700 question

I like B&Cs, I don't think there's a better option for the price. I have a really old pre-medalist on a sporterized mauser, that's been in many a deer stand, covered miles of tundra after caribou, and across many mountains in search of sheep, minus a few dings in the finish its as good as the day it was bought, which is to say, its just a tad heavy. I'm not sure the non medalists are as good as they used to be, one purchased ten years or more years ago didn't seem as quality.

I have a medalist A3 light tactical on my M700, its very rigid, free floating, decent shape for offhand and all around good in my opinion, its not incredibly light, but its not heavy either. The tactical models are set up for heavy barrels, you may want to consider that as the channel could be rather large around yours.

Re: replacement stock for rem 700 question

I have a M40 and its great, but have to ask. From your description of pretty wood, do you have a BDL with a 22" sporter contour bbl? The M40 is for varmint and tactical contour barrels. Also if you humping in the mountains maybe the B&C Alaskan hunter, at 30oz the barrel channel is cut for remmy magnum contour bbl.

Re: replacement stock for rem 700 question

thanks for the responses guys. i have a rem 700 bdl custom delux engraved receiver model. 26" mag contour barrel. that's the wood i dont want to beat to death.

i checked out b and c's at the SHOT show in vegas, liked them, and ended up ordering the alaskan II full length block stock.
thank you for your suggestions and help, hopefully this stock will meet my needs.

one further question, though. looks like the alaskan has a pressure pad on the forend of the stock. i also believe in a healthy amount of space for a free floated barrel, not just "the dollar bill test". will i hurt the integrity of the stock by sanding out the pressure pads, and opening up the channel a bit if necessary? i have done this to wood without trouble, never tried on a composite stock.
thank you

have a great day.
