Hey guys!
I'm in a dillemma right now.I have a parker hale midland model 2600 in 30-06.Its a good gun and I have hunted quite a few animals with it.Problem with it is the stock is kinda ugly and I have to get a stock made up for it as there is nothing off the shelf you can choose from.I had to glass bed it to improve accuracy.its really fussy with different brands of ammo and when it heats up it shoots like 3 inch groups at 100mt.I would like to get opinions on whether it would make sense to re-barrel it with a heavy barrel and get a stock made up for it or if I should settle on another rifle.I do have the Remington 700 SPS tactical in 308 with 1 in 10 twist in mind. Here in South Africa if I apply for the license for the remington I would more than likely be asked to dispose of my 30-06 because they are similar calibres. We have terrible gun laws here.I am really fond of 30-06 as a hunting calibre so would I be wrong in giving up a 30-06 for a 308? Can somebody also shed some light on the SPS tactical in 308.I'm opting for a 1 in 10 twist as I understand that it may stabilize 180gn bullets better than 1 in 12 twist for a 308.Any advise would be really appreciated.
Thanking you in advance.

I believe the Parker Hale is a Mauser M98 licensed copy. Shouldn't be too difficult to get a stock for it (but I don't know about RSA).

Up to about 165grs, there's little performance difference between the .308Win and 30-06. Above that bullet weight the 30-06 gets the advantage of more powder capacity.

The P-H is higher quality than the Rem M700 and I'd certainly consider having it rebarreled and restocked, but that will take TIME. Consider stripping the P-H to the action; shoot the M700 for a while, if you miss the P-H, then have it built.

Buffy I know the original parker hales are very good rifles but I believe the Midland model 2600 are not proper Parker Hales but rather put together using military surplus but I stand to be corrected.
