Does re-profiling a barrel reduce its accuracy by introducing additional stress into the metal or anything like that?

Re: Reprofiling a Barrel?

I had a dpms barrel cut to 18" and turned down to .750 and if anything it shoots a little better. But that is a semi auto.

Re: Reprofiling a Barrel?

From what I have asked most barrels that are button rifled, not a good idea.

Cut rifled on the other hand would be a better choice.

I would not re-profile personally, but I have seen it done with success.

Re: Reprofiling a Barrel?

I reprofiled a JP barrel, gas block area and forward section of barrel, it shoots as well after as it did before.

Re: Reprofiling a Barrel?

if there is a machinist, he mentioned having a fluted barrel. can the fluted area be turned down or will that kill the lathe/tooling??
