Hello all!

I was recommended to this site by some close family and decided it's time. I'm looking at building my own custom rifle (well, having one built anyways with certain parts).

I'm looking for a good gunsmith close to Northern Alabama to talk to about putting together my "dream gun".

Here's what i'm looking at:

.308 remington 700 action
Lilja 28" ss barrel (fluted with milled muzzle brake)
Cadex Strike 33 chassis (black)
Still undecided on the scope for now (something with .125moa)

I've been looking around and found a couple gunsmiths that are somewhat local but none that i've found that there are many recommendations about.

When I order the barrel it'll be roughly over an inch longer for machining and all so I'll need a place to finish the barrel and also take the action and true it to the barrel then put it all together on the chassis.

Any suggestions??

Thanks for your time!!

Send it to one of the gunsmiths that people here use. The only good smith I know of is in either Nashville or tupelo, ms that is close by. I have used predator custom shop in Nashville and they are good.

I believe Predator is in Knoxville. I could be wrong though.

whats the website for predator? I'm not too far from there. Might just go talk to them in person if they are open to the public during the week.

I strongly recommend Howard Pitts of Pitts Precision Rifles in Taft, TN. He has built rifled that have won national F-Class competitions for the son of a friend of mine. (i have shot them and it was a very expensive trip to the range since I had to have one.) He built me a 6XC off of an old 700 action that shoots lights out!

Re: Reputable gunsmiths in/near North Alabama?

I'm not trying to be difficult, but I never understood the whole, "I need a smith that lives close to me" deal. Most of the gun plumbers I know have all sorts of modern means of communication and ship all over the country. There are bunch of great smiths in this fine country, why limit yourself to someone close? Find the best one you can find and plan to pay a few bucks more for shipping, or just send it to GA Precision, Jamie @ Wolf Precision, or Moon at Crescent customs.
