I was shooting my ar-15 today and was getting signs in the brass that i was about to have a case head separation. I was using lake city brass and this was the second time I had used it. Both loads were very moderate. When I checked my die I was resizing the case as much as .015. I was able to fix the die but I want to know if working the brass that much one time is enough to cause a case head separation.

Re: resizing question: case head separation

Yes, the brass you have sized a few times an 0.015" (fifteen thousandths of an inch) you may get 1 more load cycle on it. In MOST cases, .002" is about what you want to bump the shoulders back. Some rifles may have to go to .003". But .0015" (one and a half thousandths) to .002" is more the standard.

If I may suggest, you really need to have access to a headspace guage like the Hornady one that attaches to your calipers, for setting the sizing die. The one I have is by Stoney Point. But Hornady bought them out. Either name is the same animal. Of the different types on the market, this unit is easier to use.

Good luck.
