New to reloading, and so far, so good, but have a question. I'm reloading for my AR, so I'm full length resizing. I followed the directions from RCBS to a T, is this good enough, or should I buy a case gauge?
If you have OCD a case gauge is a nice thing to have but its not crucial. If one of your sized cases can drop in and fall out of the rifle chamber you should be good.
Now, for a related story..
Last week I loaded up a box of ladder loads for my new .243win.
I dropped a round in the chamber and tried to close the bolt and it would not close. The sizing die I had was defective. If I had a case gauge I would have seen the issue right away and not had to pull all those rounds after the fact.
I checked my cases in my rifles chambers, and I also made up a few dummy rounds, and everything seems good. I'll order a case gauge though, thank you.

Case gauges are nice to have, but not necessary.I managed to load for 30 or so years before buying one.I always watched the case neck, while adjusting the sizing die. When the entire neck is sized, give the die a fraction of a turn and lock it down.Always worked for me. Lightman
If you DO buy one, I recommend the JP case gauge. It's the only one I know of made with a chamber reamer. Most others only check the headspace and OAL. The cavity walls are drilled parallel to an exact depth. They are not tapered like your chamber walls. The JP has tapered walls just like your chamber. I think they may only be available in 308 and 223 though.
I use mine when volume-loading for my ARs. I drop every round into the JP after loading up a batch to insure there will be no issues with chambering.
