Movie Theater Restrepo?

In the movie Restrepo a few times you could see a soldier looking into a large square box mounted on a tripod. It was some kind of observation device- any body know more?

GLDT, or GLDT II or a laser designator for Artillary FO's, typically called a 'glids'
