June match is history with three days of really calm winds, A couple sprinkles on Friday and a downpour so heavy on Sunday I could not see the targets past 150 yards, It didn't last long. Turnout was kinda down compared to last year but maybe due to high prices for everything, multiple shoots or high prices of everything. Friday was really busy with a few good scores being shot which let everyone know they had better be on their A game. I think this is the best month we've seen for having shooters clean the 197 yard rack of 10 targets ranging from 10" down to 1". Congratulations Chris using Ugly Beddy, Josh Moodispaw with a Vudoo, Randy Wise with his Exemplar Pistol, Travis Art with a CZ457, Mike Art with an Anschutz (Father & Son, first time ever for that) and Ronald Bagnato (first time at my match and second time ever at a Longrange Rimfire match) Scores keep going up with the better ammo being used. I'll post another post about my thoughts on Ammo and Equipment for this game separately. We got to see good examples of this over the course of the weekend.
This months bonus was little Dum-Dum Lollypops at 85 yards. When you finished the 197 yard rack you dialed back to 85 yards and got 5 shots. There was a rack with 10 Lollypops and a single 3 inch sighter hanging under them. You got a total of 5 shots and you could use as many sighters you wanted to get perfect but those came out of your 5 shots. Nearly everyone used their first shot at the sighter then went from there. There were seven shooters that got 4 kills. A couple left bullet lube on the side but it wiggles. Randy was the first shooter of the match and barely quivered it, we had to make a decision on how to score it so everyone was treated equally. It was ruled a hit but due to Randy nickname of the "King of the Nickers" he really lived up to it with that shot. I'll post a picture of it and also Joshs' "Randy" hit. Everyone really got a kick out of seeing them vaporize with a good solid hit, They were a tad under 3/4" so they made a tough target with the slightly switching breeze.
I had a few new shooters that had never seen a match like this before, One group came down with only 2 or 3 shooting but the rest cheered on they buddies. Bill Gardner brought a Ruger Precision using Blazer ammo, they said they tried to get him to shoot some better stuff but he wanted to try the Blazer and see how it'd do. He actually did quite well for never shooting out that far at targets like this with absolutely no settings and ammo that isn't usually used in the same sentence with accuracy or long range rimfire shooting. At 197 yards he got 7 out of 10 of the 10" down to 1" targets which is outstanding. It was a pleasure spotting for you and watching you shoot. You all are welcome back anytime.
Saturday was slow in the morning so I took the time to work on Ugly Beddy, some know of it but others may never have heard about the gun. I'll post another thread on the history of Ugly Beddy but with a little work with a hacksaw, woodscrews, impact driver ,screwdriver and hammer She's back maybe better than ever. Threw a SWFA 5-20 scope on it and tried some Eley Blackbox Match which we've never shot in it before Chris shot the match. Eye opener for sure, most won't believe it but it's got a cool story behind it. Detailed thread to follow on Facebook pages, Rimfire Central, Accurate Shooter and Snipers Hide in the Rimfire sections.
On to the match report, thanks to everyone that came and braved the chances of rain. Is always enjoyable chatting and watching everyone shoot. Amazing the various types of equipment and ammo being used and see first hand behind a spotting score for each shot to really see how it performs.
There is no "A" class winner this time due to Tim Humphrey using "B" class SK Biathlon in his Vudoo and kicking butt on the "A" class competitors. It came down to a couple shooters gambling on the small 1/4" wide bowling pin at 100 yards and missing it that separated the winners. Gotta gamble to win but can cost ya if ya miss. Good job Tim, that's his goal is to try and keep up with the better ammo competitors with mid range stuff but he does have an exceptional lot of Biathlon. To rub it in he grins and says he "found" a full case of it by accident in his gun room.
Darrell Smith brought down his Winchester 52D with peep sights and really did well missing only 7 regular 4moa match targets. Since he couldn't see the little Lollypops we decided to let his shoot the small middle target at 87 yards on the Odd Shape rack which may be a tad over 1 inch and he hit it 4 out of 5 times. Well done Darrell, very impressive to watch a shooter hit little targets looking thru two small holes in pieces of steel and be that accurate. Some of his groups at a lot of distances would equal the scoped competitors. He also did this with CCI Std ammo.
Due to the 25 yard target getting a dimple in it and worry about a possible deflection towards us I bypassed it and gave everyone the max score of 6 on it. Some scores with up a couple and others stayed the same but I'll address that for next match. I switched a couple racks around and the new rack was not AR500 and was not smoother on the front surface as the match progressed.
Before I forget talking about ammo, Josh Moodispaw shot some newly purchased Eley Match on Friday and it was terrible. He runs a suppressor and easily 1/3 of his shots cracked, later he checked and it was something crazy extreme spread and std. dev. He reentered a second time with some proven Eley Match and was night and day difference. Eley seems to have a big hit/miss luck with ammo lots you get. If you get good it's great but you never know. Ron also shot cheaper ammo early and some Eley Match he picked up Sat morning and it shot way way better than the Eley version of Wolf. It's all ammo in my opinion with an even decent gun.
