Another retired Army guy, just getting started in the LR realm. I'm currently fine tuning the build I was able to cobble together. It's basically an unsurpressed M110 SASS varient, sort of...
DPMS LR308 80% lower. Magpul PRS Gen3 stock, AreoPrecision M5 complete upper 24", 1:8 twist, bbss barrel in 6.5mm Creedmoor, 3lb single stage cmc trigger, nitride BCG. I've topped it with a Vortex Diamondback Tactical, 6-24x50mm, FFP scope. I've already changed a few things, as I read and learn by trial on error.
What I really need is someone in Las Cruces, NM to help flatten our collective learning curves.
Reading through some of the newbie posts, there were a couple of long range shooters from Las Cruces also looking for training partners, over the years. With any luck, some of you have connected, learned, trained and are still reading the forums; can now help a newbie expand his knowledge.
Thanks all,
Chuck

Welcome. What branch of the army did you retire from?

My first go-round I was Airborne Field Artillery, 13E, Cannon Fire Direction Specialist. Deployed as the S-3D to Urgent Fury 25Oct83-4Nov83.
ETS'd 29 Oct 85.
20 year civilian break in service. Construction, Surveyor, Contracts Administration/IT support and development, Construction Material Sales, Land Agent, Auto Sales, Event Security, Computer Software Developer (FORTRAN 77), Mainframe Software Implementation Analyst, (cics, Rexx, JCL, etc) Then same company and title but shifted to R&D with distributed platforms integrated with the existing mainframe applications.
In June 2005 I got laid-off, (a year laster the company was sold). I struggled to find work. The jobs I was clearly qualified for, would be afraid I jump ship because they considered me "over qualified," but without a degree, it had gotten to the point where as soon as they found out I didn't have a degree, "Oh, sorry! You must have "a" degree to work here." It could be a humanities degree but that was OK.
I ran into an army reserve recruiter at a job fair, immediately after being told the above.
"...Can I help you?, he says as I pause to look at the display. "I was just thinking; If I wasn't such an old fart, I'd consider re-enlisting." His response: "Well you know, they changed the rules." If you can get your 20 yrs in before you hit 60 yrs, they'll take you back." Two weeks later, I was in the PA ARNG's 28th CAB and ended up in S6 as a 25B201K. Basically a computer geek with an electronic warfare/ counter IED qualifier.
Anyhow medically retired to Las Cruces, NM about 10yrs ago with 12yrs in service.
