So...I'm considering skipping the rifle mounted IR illum. On my carbine. I haven't found myself really using it to be honest.

Has anyone found a situation where it seemed like a MUCH better idea than say just a M300?

I told you that you wouldn't need it with the Simrads. That's one of the beauties of them. From time to time the lighting will be shitty enough that you could use it though.

I only run an illuminator when I use my PVS-30 or CNVD-LR because they need it.

    Ohh, disregard.

For that setup a helmet mounted illuminator is more beneficial than weapon mounted IMO. You’re going to be looking at whatever you’re trying to put the laser on anyway plus you have it moving with your view for scanning and movement.

I use olde Armasight B850 and a Pulsar 915L on my helmets and they work fine ... focus-able and intensity adjustable .. I usually run on min-beam and min-power ...
The big benefit is lighting up the eyes of the critters ... in this mode, the critters usually detect you before you shoot because you are so close ... I've gotten a pile of rats with .22lr and laser and illum on helmet that I could not have got unless the illum was lighting up the eyes ... rats down in wood piles, etc.
Also, the helmet illum helps reduce bloom but I only notice that when zeroing due to higher reflectivity of target versus fuzzy critters ...

One helmet setup at top ... then .22LR with laser-max on 12 .. then day/night carbine with paq-4c on 12 ... then night carbine (mk3 removed) showing steiner cqbl on 3 ...
