I was ready to send off my rifle to GAP and have a list of mods & painting I wanted them to do, but I just found out its going to cost almost $1200.00 to ship it to Missouri and back from AZ by UPS. Im looking into gunsmiths closer to the AZ area and have a good guy I want to work with but he doesnt do paint. I dont want to do it myself, I want something special in mind. I have herd about 3 Wolves in Bishop, CA. Does anyone have any other suggestions of good rifle painters in the Southwest that I can easily drive to and save the cash on shipping. Ill drive to NM, CO, UT, NV & CA.

Thanx

AZ,
Did you add an extra zero in the shipping cost? I cannot believe it would cost this much.

Re: Rifle Painters

I am a local Az guy that has been doing duracoat for a long time now what was the specific job you had in mind? Solid color? Camo? I can do just about anything. I will send you a pm with my phone number so you can call me if you are interested.

Re: Rifle Painters

That shipping cost sounds high. I shipped a rifle and suppressor back to YHM a few weeks ago for about $45 - about a third of that was the insurance if I recall correctly.

The problem with that is that if it does get lost or you have insurance -- it will not be covered when you tell them that it is a rifle and they will ask so that they can calculate the value and depreciation for the settlement value. Unless you lie about the contents and can prove with recpiets what the orginal cost of said widget.

$1200????, I hope that was a typo?

Re: Rifle Painters

Got it figured out, no thats not a typo, UPS only ships firearms overnight. Cost me $580+ change to get it to Missouri. When I talked to Fedex, the lady didnt know what she was talking about and she said only ground can ship FFL to FFL otherwise it has to go Overnight Air for $450. But I talked to the supervisor at Fedex and She apologized to me for the misinformation and confermed that I can ground ship residential to an FFL dealer for $85 with $5000 insurance. So were back to getting it to GAP again as soon as my break gets back from the engraver.

But yeah, dont ever ship with UPS. They only ship firearms Overnight/Second Day Air and the cost is almost $1200 for me there and back again.

Re: Rifle Painters

AZ,
You still got bad info from UPS. They only ship handguns overnight/second day. Long guns can go ground. If your going to deal with ANY shipper get used to this kind of mis-information. Most employees do not seem to know the rules of the company they work for.

Re: Rifle Painters

I told them about that! They said no way! People at UPS dont know their jobs obviously. Someone needs a Fraking training video or something. They said all firearms are shipped overnight, not just handguns. I even tried to ship a muzzle break to Tucson from Phoenix and they said I had to overnight it. Its fine, I sent that USPS and my rifle will fo Fedex.

USPS told me that the ground ship went FFL TO FFL only and read me the regulations directly from the computer dealing with Rifles and Shotguns.. So either we have too many shity people in the local & postal systems, or im telling them the wrong things. I dont know. I got clearance for Fedex so im not going to bother with anything else.

From ATFs FAQs:

(You may also want to read the USPS Publication 52)

Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?
A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends (but does not require) that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

I have printed out copys of the regs and I take them when shipping. I usually works but after a long argument with a guy at the FEDEX hub, I decided to never use them again for anything if I could avoid it.

Re: Rifle Painters

i have mailed long guns usps several times. most UPS places (not the hubs) are private and can choose to not ship firearms if they want. now if its already boxed and they ask you contents... i have never had anyone ask me what i am shipping, only if it was flammable or fragile. and i have received a few long guns UPS via my FFL. and i just shipped a shotty USPS with $500 insurance and it was really reasonable, i just cant find the receipt to say what the actual cost was, but it was under $20 total i believe

Re: Rifle Painters

Thank you! Ill take this with me! I dont understand why I am having such a hard tome with this stuff but once I get it out, I wont have to worry bout it coming back as GAP knows what they are doing. Ive never shipped a firearm before. My only concern is the Nightforce going out with it so I hope there are no problems in transit. Thanks for the help everyone.
