Its still freezing up here in MN and cabin fever is well set in. And, a package from McMillan just showed up so I thought I would post some gratutitous rifle porn

Intended as Do-All sling over shoulder for hikes and throw in the back of the jeep prairie rifle......prairie dogs, antelope, occassional deer is shot is good.....

Sako 75 Varmint
223 1:8 twist
McMillan Sako Varmint stock--nice palm swell, cheekpiece and checkering
Mark 4 M3 3.5-10 MD. Multiple turrets about to get some paint and custom markings for yardages for my various loads 50-75 grainers.

Barreled action and scope will likely get some FDE or OD krylon before I am done.

I love the sako's!! Adjustable triggers, detachable mags (holds 6rds), and haven't seen one that won't shoot---all that out of the box. Picked this one up as a dealer sample for not much more than a new PSS would run.

Got out to the range today......eventhough it was only 17 degree out. At least it was sunny without much wind

Rifle funcitoned well....after a few rounds. There was a little binding in the action but I think that was due to a lack of good lubricant and the weather. After a few rounds and a drop of clp it returned to the "sako butter feel." Trigger is very nice. I adjusted it down to about as light as it would go. No scale but I think it is in the 2lb range and breaks clean. The lock time is very fast.

The Mcmillan stock is awsome. It is my first McMillan and I will be getting more I think.....(anyone want to trade an A series for a LNIB AICS 2.0

) The Sako varminter has a very nice feel and with a heavier fill the rifle balances perfectly. Personally, balance is more important to me than weight. I can carry a well balanced rifle all day while an unbalanced one, even if lighter, drags me down pretty quick. I had to biuld up a little cheekpiece as I do on all my rifles....I think I have big cheekbones or something but the stock fits me very well.

Anyway, here is the target pic. 3 shot group measured at .577 and the 6 shot group measured at .790. I measured a one hole group

at .203. So.......center to center that should give me about a .374 3-shot group and a .587 6-shot group. Not too bad with factory ammo and given it was freaking freazing and I haven't really shot this winter. Most of the dispersion is verticle which, is usually my problem and I think especially so when its cold out.

I think I am going to like this set up. I have a few M3 knobs laying around so I am going to make up some custom ones for the two loads it will primarily see---60gr v-max and 75gr BTHP

Re: Rifle Porn: My ultimate Prairie Rifle

Very nice, practical, field varmint rifle. Been thinkin about a rifle just like that. The Sako varmint stock is a great profile and very comfy in various field positions. Damn it, now I have to call McMillan!

Re: Rifle Porn: My ultimate Prairie Rifle

Love the 223, picked one up as my second real rifle and still go back to it alot. With the cost of ammo going up, less powder and head cost makes this a great round to shoot.
