I have been reading up on twist rates lately and everything I read is in "scientist" terms that I can't figure out. Can someone explain to me the basics about rifle twists and how they affect different bullets.

Re: Rifling (noob question)

...it's not that complicated per se...

...longer bullets fly better than short ones, but need a faster rate of rotation to be stabile than a lighter, shorter bullet of the same caliber...

...the rate of rotation or spin that is optimal varies...(edit..like brad said above)...

...if it is too fast, bad things can happen...pressures go up...bullets litraly blow apart from centrifical force...accuacy suffers...

...if it is too slow, the bullet will not be stable and could wobble or tumble in flight...this would obvioulsy have a detrimental effect on accuacy and ballistics...
