Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I've picked up a Savage MkII TR, and for optics I've been looking at the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam3-10x 40mm, and the SWFA SS10X42M.

I like the mil/mil of the weaver, but I also like the 30mm tube on the SS as well as the focus ring. I also like that the SS easily accepts a matching sun shade/killflash/caps etc.. Seems that the Weaver can do it, but they're aren't made for it, anyone with experience actually putting a sunshade on it?

I want something that I can shoot closer range with kiddos around the farm, but still be useable as a trainer for out to 200 yds or so.

Any recommendations from anyone currently using either of these, or another comparable scope. I'm looking to keep the optics cost below 450 tax incl.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

i've read that the SS will focus down to 15 ft but havent owned one in years. the one i had was on a 308 so i never shot it so close. they're supposed to have enough adjustment to take a 22 to 200.

i think the weaver is fixed focus so you MAY be able to use it on a low power up close but i cant say for sure. i know my SS 3-9 is about useless below 50 yrds on anything above 4x.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

mil/mil is preferable, but when weighed against the parallax adjusment of the SS, the parallax adjust is way more important.
As for internal adjustment, I believe the current models of the SS boast a very hefty 150 moa of adjustment, when the average of other optics in that price range is closer to half that.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I just went through the same process myself and ended up buying a Millet TRS-1 with the mil/mil option. I've only just tried it so I don't have much of an impression yet, but it's well regarded around here as $330 scope go. It does have a 30mm tube.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

If you are certain you want 30mm then definitely go for 10x42 SWFA SS. Focuses down to 10 meters. Japan glass. Full, bs-free lifetime warranty. All that for $299 (rear focus) or $399 (side focus). Bright and clear. Can't beat that for the price. Kill-flash is nice to have just i case. Also accepts additional sunshades.

I went a step below and put a Bushnell 10x40 Tactical on my .17HMR. Looks great but I think SWFA will look even better.

Choose the rings/bases wisely since you would want the scope to be as close to the bore as possible.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I use a 16x42 Super Sniper on my 40-XB and love it for short and long(er) shooting. 10-power just don't cut it for my eyes anymore! LOL!

It is a MIL/MOA system, but that is easy to figure especially after you dope your set-up. I love the parallax feature as I have found that this is an easy "cheater" range-finder. Dial in the correct parallax on an unknown target, look at the distance and dope for that range then dial it up!

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I have a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 mil-dot in a Farrell 20moa base with Seekins 30mm rings on my Cooper 57M and it works great out to 300 yards. I think the scope is going for ~$300 now.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

if its gonna be used as an around the farm tree rat rifle go with a variable.

i dislike hunting squirrels with a fixed 10x. to be honest, i have a weaver 4-16x target dot on one of my 22's and i think that power range is the cats ass.

EDITED: if you can go with a reg duplex or target dot SWFA has the Vortex Vipers in a couple mag ranges on closeout for $250ish.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I have a millett trs1 4-16x50 on my savage mkii that I take out to 200 regularly, and I also have a Vortex viper 6.5-20x44 on a 17hmr I take to 200. I think the glass in the Viper is better, but like the 4-16 mag range better. I agree with SkaerE on the variable, much handier for general hunting and the 4-16x is a great all around range for hunting and bench.
There are also alot of 4-14x choices out there. I am hearing good things on the Mueller APT 4.5-14x40 AO, and plan on trying one out this winter on another 22lr (1/4" clicks, target turrets, mildot, 30mm tube, I have read both 75moa and 96moa max adj range, AO, and only around $140).
If you decide on a fixed, the SS 10x42 or 16x42, or the bushy 10x40 are all great scopes.
If you are using this for a trainer, match the mag range to the scope on your centerfire.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

Tasco VAR624X42M. 75MOA of adjustment, focuses down to 15yd. Read the links for the other excellent features. I own 4, use them for lots of different applications, and like them.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

2nd the mueller, all the scope a 22 can use - I know if I would put a better one on a 22 it would not last long before it got swapped to a centerfire

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

my range is 25-200yds...and i shoot my .22lr with a mueller APT, and couldn't be happier for how much i paid. my apt is clearer than my best friends wotac that he has on his .22lr. now, they're nothing compared the NXS's we both have on our centerfires...but they do great for 200yds and less

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I run a nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x40 with mil dots on my 22 and I couldnt be happier with it. Glass is good, adjustments are nice clear too.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I really like my Mueller APT. Its on a CZ52 and I shot it from 50-200 yards all summer with no problems. 30mm Tube, decent glass and turrets. Can't ask for more under $150.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I use a SS10X and have no problems getting down to 25yds. Zeroed at 25yds is almost dead on at 40M. So I used the 25yd range I had access to in order to get it ready for a silhouette safari match. The 40X has the little steel chickens shaking in their boots...

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

I just got a Konus 6.5-25, and it's been great so far. Side parallax down to 10yards, clear glass, lit reticule if you care. Under $400.

Re: Rimfire Optic for 25 yd to 200 yd?

+1 for Mueller APT.

I'm very happy with mine. Mounted on my Savage M2-FV with standard bases I can reach about 240 yards with Wolf MT before I run out of internal adjustment. Think I counted something like 75 minutes of adjustment. So far it has been completely reliable and repeatable..I have something like 1500 rounds down range since I mounted this scope and no issues thus far.

I've found the 4.5-14x to be a very useful power range and it's ability to focus down to something like 10 yards is very nice for shooting pests around the house.

FOV isn't the greatest and it isn't as generous and forgiving an eye relief as I would like sometimes, but for 145.00 I can't really complain.

I also have one of these on my .308 and it's preforming well. As someone else said, consistency between primary and trainer is a desirable thing...I just have to do it on a slightly cheaper scale than some.

Try to handle a few of these scopes, think about what you are trying to do, buy it and shoot until your trigger finger is raw.
