So am thinking of purchasing my first rimfire rifle (most likely a RPRR) mostly for plinking and some range fun. I have no prior experience with this round but I see people having lots of fun with it and some even shooting at some distance. My question is what rimfire caliber do you guys recommend? Like I said am only looking for some plinking fun but wouldn’t mind trying shots at distance.

I have the RPRR in .22wmr. I am some what disappointed in the accuracy. I recently did the foil tape bedding and that did help but still not what I expected. I have the same issue with a savage .17 hmr . 1.5 to 2.0 MOA is about the best I can do on a calm day with both. For both .17 hmr and .22wmr there is not the match grade ammo available that there is for .22lr. This may make a difference.

I am self confessed rimfire junkie. I spend a huge amount of time with my 22LR rifles. I started my kids on CZ 452, which they still love, but they both ( 13 and 17) now spend most of their time with their 10/22 clones.
I shoot benchrest and some local practical matches. My go to guns are a pair of Anschutz 54:18 repeaters and an Anschutz 1727 all wearing Nightforce glass.

CZ 457 and Tikka T1X are above the high end of your budget..most would fall in the $450 - $500 range, but well worth it if you can stretch the budget a bit. You could also look in the PX for a used version of these or a CZ 455. Also think about whether you may add a suppressor later. If so get one with a threaded barrel

22LR is really the only answer here.

If you want something with more horsepower then it's cheaper and better just to reload 223. If 223 is too loud, then get a can. At least that's my unqualified opinion.

22LR is probably your most reasonable choice.

22LR can be had in various quality from match grade to bottom of the bucket plinker rounds. The problems with most other rimfire rounds is availability and lack of high quality consistent muzzle velocity. 22LR is bad enough in this regard, but there is no match grade 22WMR and the .17 rimfires are all over the place. Sometimes you can find ammo, sometimes you cannot. The general rule of the more $$ you spend the better the ammo really applies here.

Also, if you think that you might ever want to go to a rimfire match, they are almost always limited to 22lr as 22WMR and .17 will chew the steel targets up and are not allowed. Also, since 22lr is so popular there is a lot of data on it so dope can be figured pretty quickly.

Since you have stated you are looking for a bolt action, (good choice, the 10/22 platform is a never ending $$$$$$ rabbit hole) I'd recommend a Tikka Tx1 or CZ457 (specifically the 457 as it corrects a few issues of previous models) if you can extend your budget to $500.00. If you cant extend your budget then a savage will work with caveats, I've seen too many extractor and magazine problems with savage 22lr to recommend them. On the plus side, every savage I've shot with has been accurate, just not reliable. Ruger rprr is a crapshoot for both reliability and accuracy, but every body I've seen start out with one has gone to a CZ, tikka or vudoo eventually. Ruger american I'd skip as it has extractor problems--I've personally know two guys that carry a small slot screwdriver to extract stuck cases in the barrel, even after one of them had sent it back to ruger 3x for this problem.

Thanks a lot this is a lot of good information. After doing some digging I have decided I’ll most likely go with the tikka TX1 even if its a bit over budget.
