thanks to all here...you just saved me $1000. I was ready to purchase a leupold MK4...and since reading thru about 200 posts, have switched to a swfa ss 3-9x42. Mounting it on my rem. 700 xcr .308 ...
so I need to put a rail on, and get the right rings. This is my first new rifle setup. have usually had hand-me-downs and pawn shop deals. Ready for 1/2 moas.
ok, so if my rings are too high, I'm gonna have trouble getting good cheek weld. Already thinking about adjustable pads.
too low- my bolt is gonna hit the side of the scope?

or go with the group buy kit#6 with the Bobro low, slightly forward.
Mostly prone target shooting and some hunting. adding a harris 6-9 bipod.
It gets expensive to experiment with the wrong rings and bases.
any help for this newbie would be appreciated.

Re: ring sizing

I don't have details for your setup, but you can use shims or clay to figure out how high the scope needs to be and then order rings with that height. My experience has been that clearing the bolt handle and the barrel are the governing factors, but by test fitting with something you can alter and then measure will resolve that. I don't normally order rings until I have the scope for trial fitting.

Not all retailers will give ring height information, other than the ever-helpful "low," "medium," and "high," but Brownell's does. They are also very good about returns, so if you order in error you can send them back. You may need to look at a variety of manufacturers to get what you want.

Good luck!

Re: ring sizing

ok, so I'm a total nooB...I just read a dozen posts on ring sizing and about how many noob's (like me) ask the same friggin' question. I am just excited to almost be back in the game and want to be ready to shoot as soon as my scope gets here. I will be patient and size my rings with scope in hand. To everybody else with the same question...keep reading thru the posts, the question is answered a dozen times over....and the answer is: it depends!
do the math or test fit with clay (or pennies) no easy answers. never are. thanks fella's for the great non-answers.

Re: ring sizing

For a factory Rem 700 and flat or 20 MOA base with a 42mm objective scope you can use .825" height rings. That height is from center of ring to base. Some rings like the Burris XTR use base to bottom of ring but most all use center of ring to base.

Here is an old pic of a 40mm objectie in an .885" height set up and below that is a 42mm objective on a Badger base in 1" height rings. They are 34mm but the height from bas to center is 1". You can see plenty of room and that barrel is heavier than the factory. That is why the .825, which is generally the low height, will work fine on a factory rifle with 42mm objective scope.

Now that was a well done informative post for folks who don't know. Very nice!

Re: ring sizing

I went with a badger 20 moa rail, and burris xtreme 30mm low rings. everything seems to be clear with no interference although the bolt handle is pretty tight. I see the need for a different handle, and it all mounted smootly. will be zeroing soon. thanks for the advice guys.
