I tried some RL 17 in my APA 7 BAT (7/300 WSM) this past weekend. I could only find data for 160 gr bullets on the Alliant's website so I went with 60gr as a starting point for the JLK 180gr VLD's I was going to be using. At 62gr the bolt was hard to open so I decided 61.5 would be max for my rifle.

Velocity was up as I expected but nowhere as much as the chrony read.

59.5- 2949 fps avg
60.0- 3077 fps avg
60.5- 3107 fps avg
61.0- 3144 fps avg

Temp was only about 45 degrees so I didnt try 61.5gr load. I shot the loads at 200 yards and the 59.5gr load shot a 6 shot group that measured 1.360in and the 61.0gr load shot a 1.182in 6 shot group.

I shoot some 59.5gr loads at 500yd the next day in 60 degree weather and they were still way safe.

What are the specs on your 7/300? I have one in the works and am wondering how my 25" barrel length will compare to what you are getting. I am planning on shooting the 180 gr Berger VLDs.

Re: RL 17 in my 7/300 WSM

I used a rem 700 long action. Barrel is a 27in Broughton 5c with a lil bastard break. It's in a manners MCS-GAT stock w surgeon bottom metal.

I usually shoot 180 bergers w 4831sc at 2900 fps. Wanted to try the JLK vlds n thought I'd try RL 17 at the same time.

I am looking forward to the arrival of mine: 700 LA, 25 in Broughton 5C w/ FB brake, Badger BM in an a5 stock. I am getting all of my reloading components gathered up and ready to put it through its paces.
