RULES:

1) Any rifle in any caliber, any muzzle devices, any weight, any sights, 24 hour time limit.
There will be an overall standings chart, but I will also run sub-ladders:
Semi - read rules and separate thread here: http://www.snipershide.com/shooting...00yard-semi-auto-6group-30round-shootout.html
308 Winchester - 308s only semis and bolts
OEM barrel - common OEM barreled rifle, rifles you get at chain store - Colt, DPMS, Kimber, Remington, Ruger, Savage, TC, Tikka, Winchester etc. $1500 MSRP max donor.
Big-bore - 90+ H2O capacity case (cases larger than 300WM). I understand that these are heavy hitters (on shoulder, target and the wallet) - so there is only 4 groups needed to enter (just 20 rounds).

2) Folding bipod or sand bangs only. No mechanical rests, no bench rests, no vice, no F-Class-style bipods. Any rear support (bags, monopods, squeeze-bags, etc).

3) This is going to be 100+ yard challenge. All measurements are going to be in MOA. Since some people think that 100 yards is boring or that VLD bullets aren't stable yet - you can submit entries at any distance past 100 yards (not closer).

4) 6 groups of 5 shots - 30 rounds total (more groups or shots OK - but will be counted in the average). Must be on ONE target. You can use any target that makes your shooting more pleasant. Make sure there is enough space between groups to distinguish them. Only average what counts!

5) Any member can have multiple entries, but there will be only one entry per rifle. You can try again with the same rifle and improve your standing. Or you can shoot a different rifle and have a separate entry.

6) This round is over on August, 31st 2014.

7) Please, be honest!!!

That's all.

ENTRY:

1) Please post a picture of your rifle as shot

2.a) Write your snipershide name on top of the target
2.b) Write distance to the target
2.c) Write the caliber you were shooting
2.d) Write the date the target was shot

3) Place a US Quarter or closed calipers in the middle of the target (away from groups, don't try to be funny and cover a flyer) and post picture of entire target showing all 6 groupings. You don't need to measure anything - just post the picture of target with a Quarter or Calipers on it (or both). Try to take picture at 90deg to the target so that there is no perspective errors.

A Quarter is .955" and will be used as a reference in OnTarget software. I will personally run every entry through the software to the best of my ability. If someone wants to volunteer to double check my input - that would be great.

If you don't live in US - you can use any large coin of your choice with a diameter measurement.

4) Barrel maker, load data, conditions etc - up to you.

SUMMARY:

Any rifle with a folding bipod or sandbags @ any distance past 100 yards.
Take a picture of your shooting rig.
Shoot 6 groups of 5 rounds in one day on one piece of paper (4 groups of 5 rounds for "big-bore" entries)
Write your name, distance, caliber and date on the target.
Place a Quarter or calipers on the target and take a picture.
Post both pictures, add info as desired.
I will do the tedious measuring for you and post back in the thread and put you on the leaderboard.
Have fun. This is a good opportunity during load development - ladder or OCW.

Thank you for the Big Bore. My 338 LM and wallet will appreciate that. Those things EAT powder.

Well, gave it another try with a couple of the same guns from last month with new loads. The 308 is my primary toy for the season and the new load, 185 Juggs with Varget, is the bomb-diggity if I do my part—which is only a fraction of the time. Still need to work on the Creedmoor. The 338 Lapua is a newer gun to me and haven’t finished working up a round for it—I had twenty left that shot decent from its last trip to the range so burned them today. I am plagued with moving back and forth between the new F-class bipod I am using for F/TR and Atlas/Harris for these fun range sessions. Have greatly improved with the F-Class rig, but it has prevented any improvement with the others. Those are my excuses today anyway.
First is the GAP/Surgeon Hospitaller, 24” Bartlien barrel shooting 185gr Berger Juggs over 43.5gr Varget and Lapua Brass.

Second, GAP/Surgeon 6.5 Creedmoor with 26” Bartlien barrel shooting Berger 140gr hybrids over 43.0 gr H4350 and Nosler brass.

Last, GAP/Surgeon 338 Lapua with 27” Barlien barrel shooing 300gr Scenars over 90.1gr H1000 in Lapua brass. (Lots and lots of room for improvement with loading and form on this one)

All three targets of 100 rounds cumulatively shot.

Just out of curiosity, do you guys allow the barrel to cool between sets? If so how long? (I understand there are external factors at play affecting time, I'm just wondering about how long).

I tend to get impatient waiting for the barrel to cool.

Personally, when just doing casual target shooting, I never let the barrel get too hot to keep my hand on it. The amount of time between shots/sets necessary to keep the barrel in that temp range varies depending on barrel contour, finish and whether or not it's fluted. An excessively hot barrel will wear much quicker than a warm barrel and probably not be as accurate.

Thanks supratt. As mentioned I understand there are factors, but in general the times should be similar. I was asking for personal experience or preference in wait times. Anyone have a practice or shooting ritual when shooting sets?

If I know I'm only gonna shoot 20-30 rounds I don't worry about it too much. I'll let it cool a little between strings but it's HOT by the time i'm done. Usually. My routine would be to get some water real quick but that's about it.

L

I try to let it cool. Today, since I was shooting three guns, I shot the Lapua off the bench and would shoot two groups with one of the other two rifles prone and then get up and shoot one through it. I got distracted talking to a couple folks and waited longer than I normally would between so there is almost an hour lapse between the top two groups and the bottom two. If you look at the groups through my Lapua, the bottom right hole of the two left hand groups are the first shots and from a cold bore.

I definitely see the cold bore shots Will. I noticed my second attempt to Round 3 it seem I got some stringing that I thought was cold bore, but turned out to be the ammo. I will be trying again for this round. I'm gonna discipline mu self and only shoot 5 shots and allow a cool down period of 10 min (it's hot in south LA). I noticed my barrel was HOT to the touch after 2 sets and I didn't want it to get too hot. Range master came around hassling us about supposed cross target shooting, so I stopped for that day.

I'm gonna get back out there. This new rifle needs more rounds down range anyway. Thanks for the info.

Im ashamed, but its my honest shooting today lol

ill hang my head low today, try again next week lol.

This is my first big bore entry with my 338 Lapua. I shot these at 400 yards. On the third group, I had a pretty nasty flier. I am still doing some development with this gun but it seems to hang around the .5MOA range or less with this load:

300 Grain Berger OTM
Lapua Brass
Federal GM215M
87.86 gr H1000
Ogive touching lands
The flier thing doesn't really bother me too much, it's just one bullet out of 20. Wind wasn't too bad but definitely present in the 10-15 mph range but varying direction so I didn't try to compensate for it or anything, just tried to shoot between gusts. I'd like to play with this load and see if I can get it consistently in the .4 or below range. I might try this again at a closer range to see if that helps tighten things up.

Took another hide members advice to try the 140 hybrids at .050 off lands. So figured would throw another up here. Shot better when I didn't fall apart.

Don't have a lot if time behind gas guns but have a couple that sit neglected. Decided to give one of them some sunshine. No attachment for bipod, so this one was off bags.

Kinda happy with couple if these--completely fell apart on the bottom left.

Hey wild what barrels on that rhino? You have a lot of very nice rifles!

It's their barrel--not sure who makes it for Rhino, in-house or what. Like the gun but admit knowing very little about it. Buddy talked me into it in a trade. Ordered a t.r.i.m. Thingy I need to mount a bi-pod. Shot a few other groups and it has potential. Like most my long-guns, I don't do them justice.

info on rifles

Ahhshoot has a very classy 338 Lapua that purrs like a kitten... LMAO but really its a nice rig.

bge that is awesome I still need to move this AICS chassis! Anyone want one?

Gun is a remmy 700 trued by STS with a Shilen SSM 25" bbl, Jewell trigger and Tubbs bolt. I have a night force f1 3.5-15 in a bobro mount on top.

I am selling the AICS 2.0 chassis on the gun so if anyone is interested let me know. I am entertaining all offers.

This was load development I definitely learned a lot shooting 5 shot groups vs. 3. Like many have said...you get a bug hole going and then you pull one....My rifle got hot about 15 shots in and I had to let it cool ( bottom left group) I'm happy with the top right group though. I have a lot of practice to do. I'll be back soon :)
Thanks

qksilverrs: Good shooting. This rifle can be a real contender if can keep those flyers in check. Very impressive for factory rifle! I believe the retail on the rifle is under $1500 as well - so it goes onto OEM board as well.

P.S. Good example why I prefer "known object" reference for size - the "1 inch" squares aren't ...

Thank you Moboost....I'll be adding to my entries with new ones. Hopefully moving up the "average" scoreboard.

I have to get in on this. Hopefully I can get results like the rifle/shooter have done in the past when I get back out to shoot the required 5 groups.

I have a 4 group x 5 round target (I realize it's not enough for an entry) shot with an AR-15 (24" Kreiger barrel) with a .388 MOA average spread... woulda been much lower if I wasn't fine tuning the scope zero on the first group!

WildWill, just thought I would ask if you shot a mag empty during any of you larger group sets? The reason I ask is because I've found the last round from a mag always gets thrown from the group. As you know the gun doesn't cycle the same when the bolt locks open. I just happen to see a couple flyers in a couple groups and it immediately reminded me of this.

KG

Think all but one of those were run to empty. I'm going to give it another shot after I run a few more rounds the ought the barrel and get a bipod on there. Think those two issues contributed as well. My little stack of sandbags were less than perfect since the big front one is under filled with plastic balls. I will load more than five in the mag next time as well and see how it runs.

DTA SRS A1 in 260 Rem
26" Bartlein barrel
100 yds

Did some more load development today although the weather wasn't exactly ideal. Cloudy and very windy.

There is actually 4 different loads there. Going left to right, top to bottom, the first two were 46.7 gr H-4831. The next two were 46.4 gr H-4831. The fifth one was 42.0 gr H-4350, and the last was 42.5 gr H-4350.

There was virtually no difference in accuracy between all the loads (at least not that I could tell given the conditions) and no change in POI. The two H-4831 loads averaged exactly the same velocity; 2793 fps. The extra .3 grains of powder made no difference. This is the second time I have tested this and it is consistent. 42.0 gr of H-4350 averaged 2827 and 42.5 came in at 2872 fps. No pressure signs on any of the loads. I wish I had more H-4350. Only have about 1/2 lb left and can't find it anywhere.

Thanks, it's completely by accident that this rifle outshoots anything else in my gun safe (at 100 yards) including my Brux barreled .260.

This is the only picture I have.
24" Kreiger stainless 1:7.7 twist .223 match chamber .820 diameter at the muzzle.
PSA forged upper
YHM FF quad rail (a real boat anchor)
Aadland 30mm mount
Bushnell ET6245F FFP illuminated mildot scope
PSA A2 stock kit and LPK with a Timney 3 lb trigger.

I really should not post anything else about it until I have the required 6 five shot groups.
