Rounds striking right on occasion

Re: Rounds striking right on occasion

Trigger, sight picture, cant, wind.... multiple things could be going on.

Just saying you occasionally have a round impact right of your desired location does not provide nearly enough info for use to explain why.

Care to set the stage a bit more?

You could have a multitude of errors, but here's a list of likely sources: high vertical position, high right shoulder, jerking the trigger, movement of the right elbow, varying head pressure, no stability in positon, change in sight picture, and/or failure to maintain proper eye-sight alignment. This list assumes shooting from the right shoulder. Calling your shots will lead you to an understanding about it all.

Re: Rounds striking right on occasion

I can not isolate the problem. Spend numerous amounts of time dry firing and it does not present itself. I know cant is not the problem. Today I ended the day grouping to the right.75 MOA and .75 Moa LOW of POA which was at a 1 MOA square. What ever i did was consistent. Obviously it magnifies intensity at greater ranges. I did notice recoil to the left.

Re: Rounds striking right on occasion

Good shooting requires good analysis. Since you do not have a problem in dry fire practice, and in live fire the problem increases with distance, it sounds like angular error produced by an inconsistent relationship, shot to shot, between you, the gun, and the ground. This makes the angle of line of bore at rest and line of bore at bullet exit divergent shot to shot since recoil is inconsistent.

Re: Rounds striking right on occasion

Perhaps canting is an issue at longer ranges. Also, a right twist barrel will move the round right at very long ranges. At 600 - 1,000 yards with my 308 I add around 1/2 - 3/4 MOA Left windage.

Shooting with and without cant at any particular distance would certainly cause groups to be bigger than expected; however, I'd first exhaust the probable list of errors as I earlier mentioned.

Re: Rounds striking right on occasion

My .02 I had a small occurance of the same thing. I'm a right handed shooter. Turned out it was improper loading of my bipod prior to the shot.
i.e- it canted slightly right because of the springloading to assist extention (harris hbrs) on its lowest setting. I verified it by shooting prone on concrete.
Problem isolated and solved.
Hope this helps.

Re: Rounds striking right on occasion

Your trigger pull. Dry fire about a zillion times. Take your finger off of the rifle and dry fire the air trigger, like air guitar, if that makes sense. Look at your mid and ring fingers. Are they moving. Practice dry firing a lot. Does your scope move? Trigger Trigger Trigger.

ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR RIFLE IS UNLOADED

Re: Rounds striking right on occasion

What kind of optic are you using? Rifle set up and ammo you are using, need the whole picture.

Also some pictures of groups helps too so we can see exactly what kind of results you are getting at the range?

If you are just getting the occasional thrown shot to the right you probably are just moving your hand slightly while pressing the trigger. If it is on the last shot then I would say improper follow through, but all my info I requested above really helps to figure things out with?

Re: Rounds striking right on occasion

Just because you don't notice the problem when dry firing doesn't mean a problem isn't there. I would look for a coach who could offer suggestion to try, and/or constructive criticism.

All the following are for right handed rifle shooters...reverse them for lefties.

Try not wrapping your thumb around the stock.

Make sure you don't push with the heel of your thumb on your right hand when pulling the trigger.

Insure that you have only the fat pad of your finger on the trigger, and pull straight back.

Try pinching the trigger like some bench rest shooters do rather than wrapping your hand around the stock.

Don't move your head on the stock between shots. Keep the same cheek weld for all shots.

Insure that your scope and reticle is focused correctly.

Make sure you don't allow a teeny crescent shaped shadow in the left side of the scope...that pushes your shots right.

See if there is a pattern to which shot number in the string is the one that goes right. You may be slightly resetting yourself differently without noticing it. Or, it could be the rifle, especially if it is a semi-auto.

Having someone watch you, or tape yourself shooting, and see if you can notice very slight movements or changes you make mid-shot string. These changes will be almost un-noticeable, so watch yourself very closely. Something like your right hand moving only an eighth of an inch further around the stock could do it.
