RRA PP or WOA Upper?

I'm trying to decide what kind of complete upper to top off my current build. It's a RRA Lower with NM trigger. I have a 16" AR so I want a 20" on this one. Weight is a consideration so I have kind of been leaning toward a RRA Predator Pursuit. White Oak Armament has also caught my eye. Their uppers fluted would meet my criteria. Any experience or suggestions on this topic will be appreciated.

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

White Oak is a good company. If they have what you want, I would order it from them. I plan to use one of their SDM uppers for my next AR project. WOA is well thought of by HP shooters.

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

I had a WOA upper in 204 Ruger that was a Laser Beam right out of the box.On the other hand,a friend of mine got a RRA Predator Pursuit 16" upper that I was pretty impressed with but I think it would be way too heavy in a 20" for anything but a target/bench rifle with that bull BBL.

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

WOA is usually thought of as being better than a lot of other builders out there, but RRA isn't bad at all. I have an RRA 20" NM, RRA 20" hbar and RRA 20" varmint and they all shoot incredibly well. Another good one is the CMMG spr upper, it's not a "true" spr but it's a good shooter and doesn't weigh a ton.

I was building my own but ended up selling all the parts to a buddy and bought one from pkfirearms. It's a sabre 18" 1:7 with YHM 5005 handguards. Was a little hesitant to order from them as stuff looked a little cheap but the upper is assembled properly, bolt staked well enough, headspace is good, m4 feedramps properly lined up (DPMS never seems to get that right) upper has a cerro forge mark but no idea on who did the finishing touches. It locks up perfectly with my stag lower, no wobble but comes apart easy. With an A2 stock and a leupold 3-9 mark ar scope it's somewhere around 8lbs.

So far so good, will know for sure when I go to the range next week.

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

I have an 18" WOA SPR barrel that I run a GEMTECH G7 can on. It is mated to a SPIKES upper and lower, with a Geissele SSA trigger, and this rifle is a tack driver.

I am in the process of building my second WOA barreled AR. In fact, they are waiting on the free float tube and then they are sending it to me. I ordered a 20" Varmint Upper, and talked to John on the phone to spec out the chamber. This rifle will be my work mule, where I routinely shoot steel out to 600m. We have a contract with Black Hills, so I will be shooting their 77 grain SMK loads. The 20" upper will be put on a LMT lower, Geissele Match Trigger, Magpul PRS, and if it shoots ANYTHING like my 18"... I will be completely pleased.

Work gave me a case of 69 grain Winchester Lawman BTHP... so, this is the load I have been running in my 18". This rifle has an SWFA Super Sniper fixed 10x42 on it, mounted with the Burris P.E.P.R. 30mm mount.

I rappel with this rifle, shoot from the bipods... and have verified the ballistics on this 18" with the 69 grain Winchester Ranger loads, from 50m all the way out to 600m.

I can only imagine how the 20" will shoot with the match trigger.

Give WOA a call... speak with them. I would urge you to strongly consider them... heck of a good company to deal with, but you will have to wait a bit. You do get what you wait for though.

Cheers!!!

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

If you have the means and inclination to get the WOA barrel/upper, do it over the RRA.

RRA makes one of the best production ARs on the reasonably priced non-esoteric brand market, but with the WOA you get more care taken during the chambering process as John does this in house. You also will get tighter headspace on the WOA chamber. The WOA will be in the .0015" to .002" over minimum, whereas the RRA will be in the .005" to .006" range. John also does his own contouring in house. I trust his quality control and specification adherence over the Wilson chambered/contoured barrels.

You also get a true SPR spec 7 twist with John. RRA for its fast twist 223 barrels I believe just does 8 twist.

Either you want an SPR or you don't - make up your mind on that as well before making your decision. You can't get the spec like barrel from RRA. I talked with Mark Larson, the owner of RRA about producing a spec barrel or upper, and he was uninterested.

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

Not to hijack the thread any further than I already did... if you want to run a match grade trigger... skip everything and just pony up for the Geissele. It is worth EVERY penny that they charge for it. It's a bit fiddley to set up, but once you get it... it's the sweetest trigger I have ever felt. His SDM trigger is also VERY sweet. I believe, hands down, he makes the best AR trigger out of anyone. Sorry for the off topic plug. IMHO... if you are wanting to wring out the most accuracy you can, call John at WOA, and just talk to him. Not only does he KNOW his way around the machining of an accurate AR, he is also a pretty darn good shooter himself.

Cheers!!!

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

I'm using a 24" Match barrel from John at WOA that was chambered by Frank at Compass Lake.

Excellent stuff. As said, many HP shooters trust John to build what they need to win.

How old is your barrel? John has been chambering in house for several years now.

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

John and I spoke about my 20" barrel... and we discussed some hand loading options. The personal attention he gives is out of this world. My 18" SPR barrel, was just a straight order that I did. My 20" Varmint Upper that he is doing for me, is a complete upper, with their BCG.

I have heard that early on, he farmed out the chamber work... but, from what I know now, he is doing everything in house. I've handled some of the 24" Match uppers... those things are absolute LASER beams!

Re: RRA PP or WOA Upper?

John built my SDM upper and I am very pleased.
It shoots sub-MOA with ease.
Great guy to talk with and listens to your questions, not pushy at all.
I used a RRA lower with a RRA NM trigger.
