Someone told me RRS will upgrade the old style knurled knobs to the new style notched for free. Is this true ?

No it isn't a free upgrade. You can send it in with a check for $20 payable to Really Right Stuff, or you can just request to be called for payment.
The $20 covers the disassembly, new product, reassembly, and shipping back to you. Just write a note stating you wish to have it upgraded.
Include your name, email, phone number and shipping address, so we can take payment and get it back to you.
