I used a Vortex Radian tripod with their head for a while and then got a RRS TFC-34L MK2 along with one of their anvil 30 heads and I am just not a fan of the anvil 30 at all really. Is there a way to swap the head to something like the more traditional 40-50mm ball heads? Or do I need to get a whole different tripod? I haven’t seen anything on the RRS website that just has their version of tripods like the vortex radian or something, so what one is it that I should get if that is the style I prefer?

Did it come with the anvil base already installed or did it come with 3/8-16 Base ?

I know that they offer a base conversion kit from the 3/8-16 to anvil but not so sure for reverse

I suspect you would need a base that swaps out your anvil mount to 3/8 mount and the you can install regular ball head

Yeah the one I have (TFCT-34L) came with the anvil 30 to begin with along with its required base. Maybe I’ll hit them up direct and see what they’d charge for just a 3/8 base with no ball head.

call them tomorrow....I'm sure they can answer your question in no time flat....but I think not. It appears that this tripod was optimzed for weight using the Anvil-30 and that the legs seem to be directly attached to the Anvil-30 base but I may well be wrong

What don't you like about the Anvil-30. IMO they are great for spotting and especially shooting off of.

I just don’t like the tension and have found I can’t personally get it to a setting that’s useful. I either get the ability to have it locked in place or fully open and then when tightening the lever I can’t ever get it to stay on target without what I would say is “too much effort” compared to the standard ball heads.

Edit to add: yes the legs are attached directly, I was figuring I could just buy a base to swap.

Hey....we are all allowed to like what we like.....but timing the Anvil-30 lever (the newer ARC which you have...well, not that new but not the OG) is dead simple.

The timing/tension on the lever is also adjustable. There are different instructions depending on which model you have (you should be able to visually tell which one you need to watch and follow).

Or

Something like the BH55 works nice of you dont like the Anvil.

Are you shooting or glassing more?

Glassing, I get it. Longer learning curve to get smoother with the Anvil, for me anyways.

Shooting, anvil is awesome. Shoot similar with both, but prefer the lever lock vs the twist lock. Bh55 is easier to “fine tune” for tension though.

I am no tripod expert though.

I have an apex that is designed around the bh55 ball head I am not using.
I have a bh55 too, if you wanna chat.

I’ve adjusted it, I just don’t like it even when adjusted to what should be practical in the sense that fully locked allows no movement, fully open is “free gunning”. The problem I have is it isn’t smooth in between which requires me to use more force than necessary to move whatever I move.

Glass and shooting. I find the BH series more versatile for all uses albeit at a size and weight disadvantage.

Shoot me a PM with the model of the apex you have.

I’m pretty sure I have one with a 3/8 stud that’s brand new too. I can check tomorrow morning. I yanked it off the put an anvil conversion kit + anvil on my 2nd tripod for spotting.

RRS soar definitely sells them. I guarantee it.
