My father in law gave my son a Ruger 10/22. We want to have some fun with it and convert it to an AR platform.

Buy a 15/22 if you want an AR.

Grab a green mountain barrel and wait for the krg bravo chassis to start building a tac driver. You'll want the kidd trigger too, as it's worth it's weight in gold.
