Back at the beginning of November, I decided to run some shooting comparisons between my Ruger 10/22 with its TSR200 Aperture Sight's, and my Marlin 795 with its open sights, from 25 yards using the 5 Bull Target TQ-3/5, 5 shots at each Bull.
My 'Course of Fire' was:
Top Left Bull - 5 Shots Offhand
Top Right Bull - 5 Shots Kneeling
Center Bull - 5 Shots Setting
Low Left Bull - 5 Shots Prone
Low Right Bull - 5 Shots Prone
Both rifles have the same Allen Sling which was the only shooting aid I allowed myself during this rather un-official test between these two rifles.
The only change I made during the testing was to put the Marlin 795 into a wood stock, and change the factory rear leaf sight out for a Williams "open square notch" rear sight.
Here's the results of my testing. I shot 100 rounds from both rifles, with the different .22LR's I used listed at the side.
Marlin 795 (Score: 872 of 1000)
11/09/09...210-3x (Fed. #745)
11/09/09...213-1x (Fed. #745)
11/21/09...220-2x (Win. X22LR)
11/21/09...229-3x (Win. X22LR)
Total......872-9x
Ruger 10/22 (Score: 872 of 1000)
11/18/09...202-2x (Win. X22LR)
11/18/09...219-1x (Fed. #745)
11/22/09...223-5x (Eley Sport)
11/22/09...228-1x (Eley Sport)
Total......872-9x
I was surprised that I ended up with the same "overall" score from both rifles when using two differnt sighting systems, as well as the different ammo.
When I do this again I will focus the test on one brand of .22LR and see what happens then?
This was fun!!!
