My local smith has a Ruger in .300 win mag in a nice blond wood stock sitting on his shelf for $600. I was thinking about picking it up to throw medium size bullets really far. What do you guys think of Ruger as far as their actions and quality/accuracy of their barrels? This is not a gun I intend to trick out with different stocks or modify the action. I just intend to shoot this gun as it is, so it doesn't have to have all the accessories like Remingtons or Savages do. So tell me what you think of the Rugers please

Thanks guys

Re: Ruger Barrels

I only have experience w/ one ruger: a 2006 M77 Mark II laminate stainless chambered in .25-06 Rem. The laminated stock gives it some heft, but I kind of like it that way. If I do my part it will consistently put a few shots inside 1.5" at 100 yards. It's not my most precise rifle, but it's been my go to rifle for the last few deer seasons. Haven't shot anything past 225 yards, but it's well up to that challenge and then some.

The barrel isn't free floated. Don't think any of their non-varmint rifles are. I put a timney trigger on mine shortly after I got it. I think their factory triggers are better now. I also put a better recoil pad on it. Not sure what the current crop of M77s and Hawkeyes are wearing with respect to pads.

Ruger rings and integral base are what they are. They work fine for me, but I don't expect that rifle to shoot a gnat's ass at 500 yards either.

Re: Ruger Barrels

I haven't had any problems w/ Ruger rifles either. I deer hunt with a Ruger MK2 in 308 and a Ruger Hawkeye in 270. I also have a Ruger Hawkeye Tactical rifle in 223 that I will use for varmints. It's one of my most accurate rifles. Here's the link to where I posted about it. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showthreaded&Number=1766136#Post1766136
It's like everything else in like, go with what makes you happy & what you like.

Re: Ruger Barrels

Hi Ruger rifles can be very accurate if they are bedded and free floated it is unusual for them to be over moa.

We drill and tap the reciever and make a one piece weaver rail for them aligned down the centre of the action and they are good to go.

We built up a M77 action for a guy in 6mmBr he shoots it to 1000 yards and it is scary accurate will shoot 1/2" 5 shot groups at 300. it has a 8 twist Lawton match barrel the recoul lug was covered in a steel block and that was screwed on to the bottom of the action with cap screws. it was fitted to a manners T4A stock and bedded like a BDL with both take down screws coming down like a rem ADL system with the front one into the block i machined and fitted making a square back for the recould luk to sit into the bedding. the actions are very strong. then the weaver rail and it was a great little rifle.

Go for it
