Hey All

i habe a Berreta modell 70 with the long barrel but looking on a brand new Ruger MK III Hunter and would really like to hear your thought on that pistol.
Thanks

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

I'd give other 22lr pistols a look

Like the GSG-1911. So far, i've been torture testing mine, fresh from the factory, and running random intervals of suppressed and unsupressed, i still havent had a FTE/FTF for 2500 rds. I didnt strip or clean the gun when i got it, I just shot it and called it good.

Sure, gunk has built up, but the gun so far has been exceedingly reliable.

Plus it's a comfort to know im shooing a firearm that closely resembles and feels like one of my carry weapons. I dont carry a damn Luger, so why the hell would i practice for one with a ruger pistol

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

I own a Mark III Hunter and have been extremely happy with mine. The aftermarket support for this weapon is massive. Mine has been both accurate and reliable. People complain about the tear-down process, but it's not bad at all.

My only complaint (very small) is that the sights don't lend themselves as much to accuracy (bullseye level accuracy) as the other models, the sights are nearly ideal for plinking though.

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

My mk3 hunter bought new was a pile out of the box, it wouldn't shoot 10 rounds without a misfire. Sent back to Ruger twice for the same reason, then they f-ed my trigger up. Ditto on the sights, can hit a can but tight groups are not what they are made for.

The takedown is the worst of all my firearms. This might make it easier.

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

Ruger makes a MKIII Target, which looks like the Hunter but has a "slabsided" bull bbl instead of the Hunter's flutes, target style sights instead of the fiber optic stuff and a thumbrest set of grips instead of the ambidextrous slabs on the Hunter. Love mine although the thumbrest interferes a little with getting to the mag release.

He's talking about a Mk III, not a Mk I. The MK III carries all the same grip angle and controls geometry as the 1911.

The Ruger 22/45 was the precursor designed to train exactly that, including the balance of the weapon.

The Mk III's and 22/45's are excellent pistols and very accurate. I have a Mk II "Government Model" and a 22/45. There's a difference between sloppy 22's and target pistols, for the money involved the Rugers are one of the best values in the target market. The MK III target models are probably the best route to go in that line as the fiber optic "hunter" sights are pretty poor from my experience with them.

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

I had a Mk III target. One of my favorite all time pistols. As for reliability problems, 22 pistols are always a little more prone to malfunction because of the commonly used waxed coated boolits which cause heavy fouling on the feed-ramp. If you run plated/jacketed rounds, the pistol will be far more reliable. With some exceptions, the Mk III is far more accurate than any user.

The key to disassembly is to follow the instructions, it's a little tricky the first two times.

Finally, I have seen some great cans on MkII/MKIII. It makes for a great toy.

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

I would go with a mkII and just swap out uppers. The 22/45 model has the mag release on the side.

I have a MKII with the tapered barrel and it is perfect for practice and squirrel hunting

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

Picked up a MRK III hunter about a year ago and absolutely love it. I've run about 500 rounds of mixed ammo and had one ftf and as it was said earlier it was do to build up from previously fired shit ammo. Through a red dot sight onwith the supplied weaver rail and it is a blast plinking and target shooting. I personally didn't mind the fiber optic sight however I through a compensator on it which came with a traditional target front sight and it doesn't match up well with the v notched rear sight so I need to swap that. But what a great pitol andyea the break down is a bitch compare to most but once you do it a few times you become better at it and some of the parts slide in and out easier as well.

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

I really like the Rugers and have several II's and a III Hunter that I bought just for the kids. They have all been reliable and accurate. I did do trigger work on all the newr II's and the III.....which is very easy to do with drop in sears and hammers.

Re: Ruger MK III Hunter

I have a Mk2 Slabside "Government" Model. I love mine. I have close to 10,000 rounds thru mine without ever cleaning it. It is gunked up but a little lube before a day at the range works wonders. Honestly, I shot it so long, I am just wondering how many rounds I can go without having to clean it. Never had any problems out of it. Great Gun IMHO.
