It's there and it's extremely popular for over 2 years because it works well.
In the event you don't get a drop free in a mag change you can grab it and rip a whole lot easier than the totally enclosed well.
The same concept is also on AX chassis and a few others... open sided magwell for extra grip.

With my Big Horn action the screws are backed out. On my new Vudoo .22 I had to tweak them in to line the mags up. Love the cut, just easier when your prone.
I backed mine out so that the mag has more "rattle" space. Doesn't affect feeding from the mag but aids in mag changes.
I sure enjoy the cut! Better than without in terms of speed. I dont know how my screws are set. I just used however it came from the factory and it works fine. I guess its more on the looser side? Because however its set, "tight", isnt a word id use to describe its current condition. I like it the way it is though, quick, easy, reliable, and hassle free.
