ive never owned a s&b before, and i know premier is not doig those reticles any more.Im used to the nightforce npr2 and npr1, and nopt the mil dot. For those who have one, how is it shooting at distance. I am unsure how the reticle thickness will be. will it work at high power and still be thin enough on targets out to 1k or more ? how do you like it? thanks for the help

Re: S&B - and the Gen 2 xl reticle ?

I have an older S&B 5-25x56 with a Gen II reticle and it works fine. I have shot at 5" targets at 1000 yards at a match and have not had trouble. If you are looking at a used scope with a Gen II then it will work fine for you but if looking for new look at the P4 reticles in the S&B.

thanks rob. it is used, well new old stock. The other question i have is, im confused on the illuminated part. I pulled an old thread from here on the hide, would the GEN 2 XL, be illuminated in just the center, or ive also seen where some are a few mil dot right left and dwon. ?

Re: S&B - and the Gen 2 xl reticle ?

My scope has the original Gen II and it is just illuminated in the center.

The difference on the XL is that it is illuminated in the center and 2 dots on the side, and 4 down, if my memory serves me correctly.

I had one as well, and I prefer the p4f I have now. I haven't had a tough time at all picking up the smaller thickness of the fine reticle, and it has allowed me to at least mentally place my shots more precisely.

I would look at it this way- if most of your work is going to be done at 5x, get the gen2 as the p4f gets pretty fine down there. Anything above 7.5 or so, I prefer the p4f.
