I have an interesting revolver that was passed on to me by my father.
It is a model 24-3, 4 inch barrel that is double action only.
This isn't a bobbed hammer job, the action appears to have been modified to double action. The hammer throw is very short and very fast, it cannot be thumb cocked.
Was this perhaps something offered for duty carry, or is it strictly a custom shop offering?

    What is the serial #?
NYPD used S&W Model 63 and Model 60 DA only and were marked NYPD on the crane.
I have a 4" Model 63 purchased from S&W. not an NYPD used but still marked with an NYPD serial number.
Maybe yours is marked LAPD otherwise a call to S&W or the S&W forum.
    Pics would be nice!

I'll get some pics, maybe tomorrow.
I'm not sure how many pd's issued 44 specials.

Not a 4in. But might lead to some answers. A quick Google search implies only 7500 -3 were made.
Yeah, I was looking at the Lew Horton model.
Sights are different, trigger is a bit heavy but really smooth and fast.

Not a 3” I had a pair I rently sold, Blue and SS.
The trigger and hammer give the answer, they are not S&W stock.
Some one coverted your 24 into DA only and refinished the trigger/hammer.
Problem, is you must have enough mass in the hammer to assure firing.

    Thanks.
Any idea who did this type of work,, or was it fairly common?

Not common for the hammer mass problem but many were done on various models due to ignorance which is why my DA only is factory.
