Saiga .308 vs springfield m1a national match

168 SMKs are great in the M1A NM and SM.
IMHO, you'll not find a more accurate battle rifle than the M1A/M14.
The sights are exceptional as well.
Put an IPSC target at 400+yds and see how they do.

I do not own a Saiga, nor will I ever. Shot a "sporter .308" once, and the recoil rattled the handguard right off. That wa as just the beginning. I have, however, owned an M1A/M14, and it was beautiful. They are very accurate weapons. Lots of aftermarket support, and built by a reputable company. If the two in question had wheels for your competition, the Springfield would roll right over the Saiga. You should've convinced your buddy to roll right by the LGS that sold that one. JMHO

Is the Saiga a short 16" or the longer 21" barrel version? Also has it been converted back to pistol grip config or does it have the shotgun stock?

I can agree that the Saiga's as shipped new weren't the best. They were intended to be sent over here cheaply then converted back. Some did have issues but so does any gun company. I've seen a few rough ones, but they are a tinkerers gun, kinda like a Century Arms, etc.

I've converted about 20 Saigas of all flavors back to pistol grip config. The 308s were a little more problematic, feeding issues, mag issues, etc. But with a little work a lot of it could be overcome. I know a lot of people wont see value in doing it. But it was a great learning experience and it was worth it to me to learn the AK inside and out.

My favorite of all that I converted was one of my own. It was a 308 in 21" barrel setup. I built it into a 308 RPK with all RPK polymer furniture and mounted a side rail and a simple fixed 4x POSP scope. It was a cool piece, but after simplifying my gun collection a bit I sold it. Now the VEPR 308 is a good running gun. I also owned a 308 Super VEPR that was built like a tank and ate any ammo I fed it. But it was just too heavy and inaccurate VS my AR10.

I've never owned an M1A, and it's one rifle that I will own in time. I've had the opportunity to fire several. They are just a fine machine, period. I'm guessing from the limited experience I have with standard M1As, against even a re-worked, hand fit Saiga. I'm gonna say the M1A will win the accuracy battle every time. Especially an M1A NM. Better sights, better barrel and a comfortable rifle to shoot. The Saiga would serve a better SAW role I think.

Are you gonna be running iron sights only on these rifles? Optics? I would say 100yds, 300yds, maybe longer at steel. What kind of range do you have to test them on? Are you gonna run Ball ammo through both? Match Ammo?

I'm interested to see how they do, good luck.
