Hi Guys,

I have a quick question for you all. I just went to the range for the first time with my new to me Sako TRG-22 in .308. The scope is sitting as far back as possible, but when set to 18x, I can't get close enough as the eye relief is really short at that magnification. The LOP is perfect, so no problems there. On 3x, it's perfect. Just anything past that and I have to get into a bad position in order to see the whole picture(or only see a small view). Any suggestions on what I can do?

I'm shooting from prone and I can't shorten the LOP anymore.

Thanks

Could be a length of pull issue, do you have spacers in the butt pad? As well what IOR are you running, the eye relief on those can vary. Supurb glass usually but other things can and do go wrong with the IOR's. In general Steiners and SnBs have better eye relief. Lastly, you need to look at your ring/mount set up and see where it is on the rail.

I did the buttpad in elbow to finger and it set there perfectly. No spacers. I did replace the buttpad with the limbsaver, but it didn't really change LOP at all(removed the two spacers in there already). I had the problem before with the factory buttpad. I'm using the 3-18x IOR. I love the scope and would hate to have to change it for this sole reason.

Due to the very short rear tube section on the IOR, i'm limited in how much I can actually move it around in the rings. Of course I have the rings set all the way back along with the scope all the way back too.

Terrible picture(only have a phone), but I think it does a good enough job of showing.

As said, it is a well known issue with the 3-18x42.
EGW made a rail that extended to the rear for the model 700 just for this reason.

I have one that I like very much, but I am long limbed and can work around it.

The 3.5-18x50 does not have the same problem as there is significantly more room between the saddle and the ocular housing.

Would one of those rails fit on the Sako? It seems they make a couple different one's for different guns. Indicating to me that it's gun specific.

Otherwise it would appear my only option is to get a new scope...

You could take one of those extended unimounts and mount it backwards. Some allow that and some don't.

If you can live with everyone saying "You know your mounts on backwards", it's an option.

Well the IOR 3.5x18 is pretty good if you get a nice one. I have owned two of those and one of them had a fucked up erector issues. Not the best eye relief but the box is ok. 18x is really a perfect for that gun. But that said I would look at the Steiner 16x, just a killer eye box and relief for the buck, one of the best values in a tactical optic.

I know the MP8 is nice and the glass is stunning but those IORs are a mixed bag. I say move on if it's uncomfortable. I run a TRG 22 and 42 and it's a shame to not put on a top tier optic if you can afford it.

I appreciate the help guys. I think I may switch scopes are this point. A good mount will set me back around $200 and I could use that towards a different scope. I do love the IOR but moving up to 5-25x or similar range would be okay with me too. I plan on shooting precision rifle matches soon. A lot of them run higher magnifications. I'll look for a Steiner if I can get one on the cheap.
