Hello folks.

Been browsing the Hide for a while and I must say, I'm hooked. This site has helped educate me and greatly improve my shooting. But like some people here, I am no longer satisfied with "good enough." I am now at the stage in my game where loading is the next big step to improve my down range accuracy. For now, I do not load, but my friend does. He has developed loads for .243, 7mm-08, .308, and 300wm that have produced great results in my rifles. Because my wallet took a hit with all of the shooting that I am doing, I was thinking of a cost saving short cut. I'm sure you guys here have already discussed this at great length, but my searches through google mostly turn up errors.

In developing a load to hunt with, I purchased 140 gr. Ballistic Tips to shoot paper with, and figured my friend could just replace the Ballistic Tip with the 140 gr. Accubond, load everything else the same, and be able to hit the field. He tweeked the Ballistic Tips until I was shooting sub half moa. But when he loaded the Accubonds, groups opened up to about 1". I have shot the loads on several different occasions to make sure it was not me. His rifle shoots both bullets exactly the same. I like to hunt with 140 gr. Accubonds in my 7mm-08. Every deer I have hit has dropped. My shots are all under 200 yards, so the 1" groups I get with it are good enough. But now I've got the bug. I want to stretch it out a little and maybe extend my kill range to 3 or 400 yards max. I would like to get the Accubond shooting like the Ballistic Tip.

In theory... Can (should) the Ballistic Tip and Accubond shoot the same if loaded the same? With the same specs on the bullets, shouldn't they? Before I start questioning my friends loading process, has anyone been able to achieve this? I understand that all guns shoot different and that my rifle may not like certain bullets. If anyone has tried this, please give me your thoughts, opinions, and findings. If this has been discussed at length already, I apologize, and ask if someone can provide the link to the thread. We can always just find a load with the Accubonds, but half the fun is learning. Thanks folks.

Re: Same load for Ballistic Tip and Accubond???

I haven't found the Accubonds to be interchangeable with Ballistic Tips. I have gotten AccuBonds to shoot well in every rifle I have tried them in, just haven't been able to swap them out with Ballistic Tips and keep on going. I like tinkering, so working up a new load for me is good way to spend some more time at the range.

Couple of things I really like about the AccuBonds is that they are long and they seem to think they're match bullets, at least to somewhat reasonable hunting distances (400 yards and under). Some of the best groups I have shot out of my Sendero were with AccuBonds. The rest have been either with AMAX's or Bergers.

It could very well be that accuracy will be different between Ballistic Tips and Accubonds but the powder charge to get optimum accuracy from each will probably be the same or very similar. In fact, in rifles, I've found powder charges for optimal accuracy has been the same even with such disparate bullets as Hornady SSTs and Barnes TSXes.

Sometimes you get lucky and two different bullets shoot to the same place but many times that doesn't happen. You just have to test and fine out.

By the way, I haven't used Ballistic Tips but have used Accubonds with great success both for target shooting and for hunting.

Re: Same load for Ballistic Tip and Accubond???

Try the Hornady SST/Interbond pairing. Some say the Interbond is at least as good as the Accubond, and mine shoot the same velocity with the same powder charge to a POI so close at 100yds I don't change my zero. BC is the same as reported by Hornady. I use the same die settings and replace the sst with the Interbond for my hunting loads. (308 150's) Hornady = cheaper, but awesome IMHO.

Re: Same load for Ballistic Tip and Accubond???

Thanks for the input. He's loading an OAL of 2.79 I believe. I'll see if he can keep the same load, but play with the seating depth a little. I'm shooting a Sako Finnlight. Any suggstions on seating them out farther or make them jump more?

"...when he loaded the Accubonds, groups opened up to about 1"."

Change something in a load and something usually changes.

Re: Same load for Ballistic Tip and Accubond???

While the bullets may look the same and have the same ballistic coefficient a quick glance at the Nosler site tells me that the bullets are different lengths. 1.255” for the Ballistic tips and 1.290” for the Accubonds, so there is your problem. Having not handled these particular bullets I don’t know where the differences are but it could be anywhere, ogive, Meplat, bearing surface length maybe the boat tail.

The end result of your friend loading different bullets to identical specs = different results.
