Anybody ever use "satin" finish paints to paint up a rifle? Im wondering, if gone over with a matte clearcoat, if that will be enough to dull them up enough.

Those Krylon "fusion" paints have some real decent colors id like to use, but they only come in gloss or satin, dont want to use them if I cant take the edge of the glare.

Thanks

You can dull them up with a matte clearcoat or with Steel wool if you put the paint on thick enough.

Its sorta extreme, but we've let all the aerosol out of a spray can, punctured and drained the paint, then flattened it with talc and sprayed it out of our touch-up gun. It doesn't affect the hue, just gives a nice matte finish in a color not normally available in flat. Now granted this was mainly on motorsports applications, but can't see why it wouldn't work on guns too.

If you do decide to use a matte/satin clearcoat, make sure it has the same makeup as the base paint you used. Reason being if you use 2 different types of paint they will fight each other and spider crack making your hard earned job look like a preschooler did it. I did use a single stage paint and came back with a matte clearcoat that is a strong bond, and it looks and holds up great.
