my first ever bolt gun. Been shooting handguns for a long time an now after promoting from a friend I decided to give bolt gun shooting a chance. I have a model 10 fcp-sr 20" barrel in 6.5 creedmoor on order. I also have an athlon Argos btr 6-24x50 on the way. Now I need to figure out what rings. I believe it has a 0 moa base on it. So I am wondering what height rings I need(I believe low is the answer but also read where someone suggested .87 or medium) or if I can use a 1 piece cantilever style mount?

I have been doing doing a lot of research on setting up a rifle an it seems common to not go through the mapping process when using a 1 piece mounting setup.

Im also wondering about lapping the barrel. Should this be done immediately or is it something I can do down the road if I am wanting to get a little more out of the barrel?

Please have grace if my questions are ignorant. I really have done a lot of research but I always like to ask the pros when I have a chance.

Thanks in advance for any help fellas

If it's your first ever bolt gun...

1. Get it and look at it.
2. Handle it. Is it comfortable?
3.Is the operating system good? Good trigger? Bolt throw, travel, lockup?
4.Take it apart. Check everything out. If good put back together with red loctite.
5.800 yards or less 0moa mount ok. With factory mount low rings should be fine. over 800 yards go 20 moa mount. Install mount and scope with red loctite. make sure to use top quality rings and check fit and concentricity before leveling scope to rifle and torqueing.
6. Take gun to range. Zero by looking through bore and scope to determine poa. have 20 rounds of cheap ammo for iniatial zero and cleaning.
7. Fire at target. Zero scope as good as possible by the first shot. Fire 4 more shots at target. Clean bore. re zero using average deflection.
8. Fire 5 shots at a new target and confirm zero. clean bore.
9. Now fire the next ten shots not focusing on accuracy. Just think about the fundamentals and whether the rifle feels part of you. Lop, trigger, bolt, mag, everything that makes you comfortable with the rifle.
10. Now come back to the forum and re-ask the same question.

Be careful going off just "Low" or "Medium." Different manufactures use different heights for their sizes. I generally go for the .87 range in the chance I switch to a 56mm objective, but most "Low" rings should clear a 50mm just fine. As far as everything else, just get out and shoot the gun as is and come back with a range report.

For mating the Athlon scope 30mm tube with the 10FCP, Seekins Lows and a Seekins 20MOA base will fit the bill just fine. It will allow enough space to install Aadmount caps, and be low enough that you won't have to stack tons of crap on the stock to get a good cheek weld. That is, IF you are not planning on using a chassis with a full handguard.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm really hoping to get to the range Saturday but not sure if I will have the time. This is my first venture into any kind of longer range shooting, but good or bad I'll post up my results when I go.

Prepare to be addicted

Yea I know how it goes. Hoping I can keep under control for a little while. What really intrigues me is getting into hand loading. I think any extra money will be allocated to that. The idea of working up loads an shooting precise with ammo I built is very intriguing to me.
