wherever I may roam...
Went pricing a new rifle today, and this is what I found. Found a Savage 10FCP 20" heavy fluted barrel w/larger bolt handle,DBM,bases and tan syn. stock for 699 and sales person said would be reduced this weekend when Dick's has a big gun sale this weekend. They also had a Rem.700ADL w/24" heavy barrel, camo syn. stock, and cheap Rem.scope for 599.
I have always liked Savage rifle since I had a 110 Tac.30-06 several years ago. The only experience I have with a Rem. is the 710 I picked up about 5 years ago as a "cheap" deer rifle.
I know the love runs deep for those that have both, but anyone own both and which one is a better shooter out of the box?
I am looking to get a rig to start trying to get out there with. Any and all suggestions welcome, serious ones appreciated. Thanks,
Eric

Re: Savage 10FCP or Rem.700ADL

I own a Savage, a buddy has a Remmy, I out shoot the Remmy any day of the week. I have shot both back to back and my Savage groups better. It's not a huge difference and I think all in all it's what you prefer and if you ever want to customize then the Savage is easier to do. I give a +1 for Savage for multiple reasons. You won't be disappointed getting the Savage and it has more features. I met a guy this past weekend that had the exact gun your talking about. I hadn't seen a factory Savage 10 with that barrel before and he said it was an exclusive for Dick's. He was shooting it at 600yds with very good results.

Tough call really as there are pros and cons to each. The plastic Remington varmint stock is widely disliked but not quite as bad as the one on the Savage which I was only too happy to replace! The flex on that thing forward of the magazine was pathetic. Mine was not an Accustock, Perhaps your is?

As an ADL, you'll have to cycle your rounds through the action every time you unload it rather than remove the magazine from the Savage or open the bottom metal on a BDL.

I wasn't crazy about the Savage magazine or the bottom metal on that 10FCP stock and have since replaced it with a B&C and had CDI bottom metal installed.

That said, I think you'll be happier with the detachable magazine all things equal. I have a .308 Savage Magazine I'll sell you if you go that route!

The scope will be nothing special on any package gun but you can at least go and shoot with it until you get what you really like.

I replaced the X-Mark trigger on my SPS (BDL) because it would not hold at my setting of 2.25 lbs. The Savage 10 FCP has an Accutrugger that can be set to 2.00-2.5 lbs pretty easily.

I haven't tried the new X-Mark but it is said to be better and easier to adjust.

One definite plus to the Savage is that, when you want to rebarrel it, with a little networking or a small investment in tools, you can do it yourself.

You have to be a little more cautious when ordering replacement parts for the Savage as they have somewhat confusing model numbers and the stock screw spacing, magazine types and the contour of the rear bridge vary or have been changed over the years.

Accept that you will be modifying either and you won't be too tormented about making a "Wrong" choice.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input gent's. As stated above, am leaning more toward the Savage, because of the good experience with them in the past. Was just wondering if saving the $100 was worth giving the Rem. a shot. I do like the fact of the Savage having the DBM, and the ability to rebarrel myself with a few tools.

Re: Savage 10FCP or Rem.700ADL

I have a Savage 10FP LE1. It's almost the same as the FCP, except the fcp has the 4 round detachable mag. Awesome rifles! I use it out to about 600yards. I don't even have a fancy scope on it, just an $80 Leapers 8-24X50. And the Accutrigger is the shit!

Re: Savage 10FCP or Rem.700ADL

The accutrigger is ok, but plan to spend another $80-90 and get a rifle basix trigger. Much better than the accutrigger, and will shrink the groups a little. that said, I just picked up a savage 12vlp in 204 and put 10 shots in an inch last weekend with the accutrigger.

A 10FCP (if it has the Accue-Stock) for $699 (or less) is more rifle at a heckuva deal. While aftermarket triggers are available, you might want to make your own decisions about the Accue-trigger. Most who have them like them.

Greg,
Not the Accu-stock, when I handled the rifle in the store the stock would flex( could touch to the barrel), but am still leaning toward this rifle. Now I just need to decide on the caliber. .223 or .308? .223 would allow me to shoot a bit more, as I don't reload yet. And will make it a little more enjoyable for the wife to shoot. But she does handle shooting my other rifles just fine(she hunts with my .270). Choices. Any input?
Thanks,
Eric
