been wanting to put together a 1:7 or 1:8 twist .223 bolt and stumbled over a deal on a 7mm-08 stevens 200.

i know the barrels can be swapped out but what has to done to the bolt.
can i just swap the bolt face?

that deal will not be a deal when you are done, I have been looking researching 223 bolties and made a deal on one last week, for reasonable performance for the $(and resale) savage or rem 700, pick your flavor I would have taken either for the right deal. If you want single shot go savage target, other wise a varmint model of either with at least a laminated stock, why buy a plastic boat paddle and have to replace it. one up from the laminate is the HS precision which is what I made the deal on but considered the laminate also. For a good used one with laminate stock 650 is a fair price and they will go fast, for the ones with basic scopes and rings do not add more than 25 extra and plan on replacing. For less than that you are getting the deal of the lifetime or junk, I would bet on junk

Dang George, simmer down now, you're jumping to conclusions with out asking the rest of the story.
I'm a more of a rem 700 fan but it sounds like the stevens can be built for 2-300 less and still have what I want. The stevens/savage has had me curious for a while now and this is my chance to play with it. The only part of the original being used is the bolt & action; would be that way with remington too.
Probably end up with about 1100 in it minus a scope; that number does include base & rings.

The reason I posted the question is I've heard from some that there is more to it than barrel and bolt face when converting to 223.

for this specific build I believe it is just the bolt face. Savage does have different firing pins but only from the magnums to standard rounds. So you don't have to change the firing pin. Some magazine components have to be changed but depending on if your going to a custom dbm anyway then who cares (not to mention savage is coming out with a new dbm soon). You can sell your old barrel, stock and bolt face to recoup some money, or trade bolt faces straight across. And depending on what kind of barrel you plan on getting you can get a take of from $50 to a high quality custom brand new barrel to your specs at $250 and some cheaper. A lot of the work thats needed to be done can be done by yourself so you save a ton in gunsmith fees. If you have a good deal on a rifle it is well worth it.

Re: savage 110 / stevens 200 7mm-08 to .223

I picked up a Stevens 200 in .223 for $ 199 and some change out the door. It is a sporter weight barrel, but I will change it after my daughter finishes school. Right now it is a good shooter for the money.

I plan on replacing the stock. Not sure if I will go with a Manners or McMillan. Still doing the research.

If you are picking one of these up from Academy for the 179.00 deal, I don't think you will be disappointed.

I have not tried swapping the bolt between my Savage 308 and the Stevens 223, but they look identical except the bolt face.

after a little searching around and calling savage. to convert i need
bolt face part # 104877
baffle part # 103321
extracter part # 102278

i can find everything except the extracter on the net and savage will not sell the part to anyone that's not a gun smith. May try calling again to see if i get someone else.

ordered a McGowen 20" barrel 1:7 twist shilen light varmint contour.

in the mean time i've put the rifle up for trade for a stevens 200 in .223 on a couple local boards. if no one trades before i get the converstion parts i'll just convert the 7mm-08.

traded a scope for the rifle and a little cash. if the other guy got the rifle at the academy deal he got the better deal in the trade but i'm happy regardless.

update:
went my local toy shop and got the parts ordered total's about $45.

Order a rifle basix or SSS trigger and it will out perform you with a good stock. Good luck and I LOVE my stevens. She's off getting a muzzle brake now so I don't need a spotter at competitions.

Good luck,
Merritt
