Savage 12 FV question

Does anyone make a bottom metal kit to convert a Savage 12 FV to an external mag (223). I have seen other calibers but not 223.

The only thing i am finding is setting it up with a AICS bottom metal conversion then using AICS .223 mags.

Pacific Tool and Gauge has an AICS DBM kit. Just have to make sure it will work with your model's screw spacing.

Make sure your 12 has 4.4" spacing and side bolt release (it should) and throw this in it. Stock might need minor inletting that can be done with a dremel. Then you'll need a 223 polymer MDT or steel Accurate mag. Worked great on the Savage 10 I used to have (in 308 Win).

You’re not going to find .223 unless you are able to find a savage take off. You can use that bottom metal with the AICS 223 specific mags.

That asks for what mag you want. See where the option for “No Mag” is? That’s what you want, just the AICS bottom metal. It’s also why the price falls by $45.

So, your saying that setup will work with any AICS 223 mag??

Yes, any 223 AICS mag will fit, which is only about 4 different makers at the moment (old AI mags, Accurate Mag, MDT, and Magpul I think is releasing one). AICS is just a magazine pattern. If you wanted to change barrels and boltfaces later to something in the 308 family, this bottom metal would still work for you by just changing to a 308 family mag.

However, as the poster above said there might be some issues with the Accurate 223 mags and Accurate bottom metal. I'd research this a little more before pulling the trigger on it. I would think there is a work around, or maybe trying a MDT poly mag, but have no experience as my Savage with Accurate Mag bottom metal was in 308. Maybe give Accurate a call and see if they know something that might work.

All you gotta do is cut the baffle on a .223 savage bolt head or get a baffle for a .308.

Its the baffle that has a little arm that shortens the bolt throw. Stupid simple to cut or swap out.
