Gunsmithing Savage 12FV cutting barrel what would I lose?

I have a Savage 12FV with the heavy 26" barrel chambered in 22-250. I am considering having my smith cut 4" off of the barrel. The barrel has a 1 in 12 twist and I don't anticipate shooting anything heaver than 65 grain bullets or past 500-600 yards. Would there be any considerable losses in doing this such as accuracy?

The reason i am contemplating this is that the 26" barrel is difficult to handle in the truck. This will mainly be a coyote gun but I don't want to lose a lot of accuracy for ease of handling. I know there have got to be people here who have done this.

Thanks
Robert

You might loose up to 100 fps in velocity depending on the powders used , the accuray will generaly increase because the shorter the barrel the stiffer it is and a good smith will likely put a better crown on it that comes from the factory.
