savage 30-06

Re: savage 30-06

Good for him. Since it is your first post, we will forgive you for slander. Good rifle. Great round. Will do anything you want in the lower 48 states. Give him credit for a good first choice...although you seem to be dismissive of his credentials and abilities. Most younguns are. Kiss him and tell him thanks. Ask to be taught about the rifle, cartridge and the abilities of each. So many choices out there, but with the great old 30-06 you will NEVER be undergunned. JMHO Good shooting and show your love for your Dad. To him. Life is short. You will find that out. JMHO

Re: savage 30-06

There's nothing at all wrong with your rifle or the round. If you'll spend a little time researching it (even if its just this forum alone) you'll see that Savage makes one of the better "out of the box" guns. It really doesn't have to be a 5G custom built rig to be a lot of fun. former naval person said it right, theres not a lot of limits for that round IMHO.

On a more personal note, the only guns that I have that would have to be pryed from my cold dead hands are the ones that my father and grandfather gave me. All other's are subject to sale or trade based on what I'm into at that moment (meaning I have no personal attachment to them). I have a locker full of old shotguns and rifles, most of which I would be afraid to shoot because of their condition, that will never leave me because they are all that I have left from my grandfather, aside from all the great memories.

I'm not trying to sound like some kind of wise man, so I guess what I'm trying to say is: Your dad isn't always going to be around to give you gifts like that, so be thankful for what it means more than what it is. Again, I don't mean to sound like I'm gettin in your ass about anything, but I've seen a lot of loss lately and hindsight is always 20/20.

If I was you, I'd spend a little money on some good glass and whatever other goodies you might want to add to it, then pull an extra shift or two, buy a ton of ammo and spend a day at the range with your dad and your new stick. Oh yeah, and you might want to invest in a little ibuprofen too, that thing is probably gonna have a little thump to it. I had one a few years ago and it was pretty light, even fully kitted.

And welcome to the hide. I'm a new jack myself...

+1 on what he said. Treasure what your family gives you. My most valuable guns are not the most expensive. But about the rifle, it should be more than enough gun for most people. IMHO savage sells one of the best value guns on the market. I own 4 of them and they are some of my favorite guns. They are impressively accurate for the money and the 30-06 is a pretty nice round.

Re: savage 30-06

I've got an old Savage 110 in 300wm that I'm converting to 30-06 to give to my brother. He is living in some prime hunting area but doesn't have a rifle or much $ and brand new twins. I'm waiting on a Stockade stock and the Criterion bbl and will give him a semi-custom build on the cheap.

I went with 30-06 because he can go deer or elk hunting no problem and and shooting it won't break the bank. The only problem with the 30-06 is justifying another stick, because it does so many roles so well
