Hey fellas on a savage does barrel nut need to be free floated along with the barrel?Or does it matter

some like it to be some don't, I like everything from the front of the recoil lug forward to be free floated.

I put clay around the nut for some clearence and bedded the barrel for the first 1 1/2 and have no problems.

I just rap it with a few layers of tape and bed a few inches of barrel.. GTG

I'd float it. If you change barrels, the nut will likely end up indexed differently, and the bedding will have to be relieved anyway. The bit about a couple of wraps with tape should work fine.
