Savage questions

I'm looking for a new coyote/undesirable critter rifle. It doesn't need to be a heavy barreled beast, no P dogs to shoot around here. I've been looking for a used Winchester 70 Featherweight, but for the same money I think I can get into a new Savage with the Accutrigger. Reading the Savage web page I'm getting info overload, how many configurations do these guys put out?

Which of there offerings would compare to the Winchester? Looking for 22-250, when I shoot out the barrel it would be a d.i.y. job to turn it into a 6 Dasher or something similar. I see places like E Arthur Brown have savage barrel kits for less than $250. Our should I just be patient and look for the Model 70 at a good price?

If you want easy re-barreling, Savage is the top choice. If you are interested in a nice Win70 in 220 Swift, PM me.

Depends on your budget for your critter gitter.

You have the vase Savage up to the long range precision.

My recommendation would be for the predator hunter max.

I would recommend the 6.5 creedmore, then you'll never need the 6 dasher and you can shoot anything from tiny varmints up to elk with it.

if you plan to rebarrel, buy a stevens. You will save some money over the savage, and with the money saved, invest in a rifle basix trigger. Much better than the accutrigger.

also, with the money saved, step up to a better barrel. EABCO barrels are made by er shaw if i remember correctly. from what I have read (never owned an er shaw barrel), they can be hit or miss (no pun intended). check out savageshooters and sign up for the $12 paid membership where you can access the members classifieds. it will pay for itself in money saved.
There are a lot of good quality barrel makers for savage prefits. i have had excellent results with mcgowen, and lots of others like criterion (cbi), shilen, etc, etc. You can even check with jim at northland shooters supply for factory takeoffs (and cbi, mcgowen and shilen).
Replace the recoil lug with a sss when you swap.
add stock of your choice and you're ready.

+1 on the stevens. I have a stevens 223 and a savage 12 223. With a new trigger and hand loads the stevens is as accurate as the stock model 12 but cost about $120 less than the 12.

Ditto on the Stevens. If you look on savageshooters.com, Stevens actions often come up for ~$220. Add a barrel and the stock of choice and you're set.

On finding a Savage pre-fitted barrel, you're best source is gonna be Jim @ NSS.

I'll put a +1 to fdkay's recommendation for the Predator Hunter Max-1. I have one in .243 and it's scary accurate. It's not light by some people's standards, but the barrel is more of a medium weight and I don't have any trouble shooting it offhand. This rifle has actually become my new favorite and I find myself wanting to shoot it more than my "tactical" 10FP in .308, in pretty much every scenario. I have nothing against the Winchester, nor do I have any experience with them. I'm only recommending what I'm familiar with, since it's been so impressive. If I was to buy another Savage for an all around "hunting" rifle, it would be another Predator Max.
