Looking for a savage short action (10) rifle with a 308 bolt face for a project. Found a good deal on a .223. I remember hearing that replacement bolt heads were available? Can anyone provide info on where to get a replacement bolt head? Any issues with doing this?

Re: Savage replacement bolt head?

Brownell's, gun part corp., and of course savage. Easy to do, the hardest part most of the time is getting the big ass screw loose.

Midway sells them. You'll also need a magazine box and follower if you are setting up a blind mag.

Savage won't sell bolt heads to individuals...just gunsmiths. Midway & Brownells are probably the easist places to get bolt heads.

First, you'll need a .473 short action RH bolt head

You'll then need to either strip your existing .378 (223) bolt head and put the items on your new .478 bolt head, or buy the items separately and install them, allowing you two complete bolt heads.

You'll also need a new front bolt baffle, as the extended baffle that comes on 223 rifles won't pick up 308 cases (or, as I found out, 223 rounds from an AICS magazine).

I think Sharp Shooters Supply sells complete, trued bolt heads for $55...that is if you can get them on the phone to place an order.

Shouldn't take you very long to assemble a bare bolt head, disassemble your existing bolt, swap bolt heads and then put the whole thing back together - maybe 20 minutes if you move slowly.
